This curriculum is intended to further thoughtful examination and responsible action among high school students about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. Unlike other curricula this discussion is not in the context of civil or political rights but in the broader context of human rights. These rights, as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, include, among others, the right to education, identity, security, assembly, expression, employment, health, and family--all relevant to the current discussion of LGBT rights. The activities in the curriculum promote appropriate action in addition to reflection and discussion. Students are asked to take responsibility for the homophobia that causes human rights abuses. The curriculum aims to prepare students for responding in meaningful ways to such abuses. It is divided into the following parts: "Part 1: Introduction"; "Part 2: Activities" contains: (1) "Words Really Matter: Examining Language at School"; (2) "Are Gay Rights Special? What Does the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Say?"; (3) "What If Things Were Different: Charting the Effects of Change"; (4) "Is It a Crime To Be Gay? Debating Tolerance in a New Democracy"; (5) "What Must Be Done To Achieve Equality? Evaluating Different Approaches"; (6) "I Now Pronounce You...Same-Sex Marriage Legislation"; (7) "Youth Dealing with Homophobia: Stories from Real Life"; (8) "Rights Abuses around the World: What Can We Do?"; and (9) "Taking the Human Rights Temperatures of Your School"; and "Part 3: Appendices" contains: "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights" and "Resources." (Contains a resource list of 30 books, 12 videos, and 11 Web sites.) (BT)

Que(e)rying political practices in Europe is the first queer and poststructuralist reading of political rights concepts in the specific European transnational context. In the last thirty years Europe has seen the rise of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender movements fighting nationally and transnationally for participation rights in society. In addition academic theorists have increasingly paid attention to the epistemological and ontological roles gender and sexuality play in modern politics. However, in the political process of arguing for rights the centrality of those roles is mostly hidden from view in official institutional and movement discourses. This book investigates the conceptual themes of lesbian, gay, and transgender rights and lobby politics in Europe and their open and hidden relations to binary and hierarchical orders of dominance. It contributes to an understanding of the conditions upon which politics of inclusion, participation, social justice, and equality rest and why struggles for sexual minority rights have been so difficult and slow. The book illuminates how the paradigms of political discourses constitute, consolidate, and contest the meaning and cultu

Now in its second edition, Rethinking the Gay and Lesbian Movement provides an accessible overview of an important and transformational struggle for social change, highlighting key individuals and events, influential groups and organizations, major successes and failures, and the movement’s lasting effects and unfinished work. Focusing on four decades of social, cultural, and political change in the second half of the twentieth century, Marc Stein examines the changing agendas, beliefs, strategies, and vocabularies of a movement that encompassed diverse actions, campaigns, ideologies, and organizations. From the homophile activism of the 1950s and 1960s through the rise of gay liberation and lesbian feminism in the 1970s to the multicultural and AIDS activist movements of the 1980s, this book provides a strong foundation for understanding gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer politics today. This new edition reflects the substantial changes in the field since the book’s original publication eleven years ago. Rethinking the Gay and Lesbian Movement will be valued by everyone interested in LGBTQ struggles, the politics of movement activism, and the history of social justice in the United States.
