Background: Gay men have adopted the use of people-nearby applications (PNA) to connect with members of the LGBT+ community. PNA uses global positioning system (GPS) data to locate other users in the area and facilitates communication between users through online profiles and instant messaging services. Objectives: This thesis explored gay men's process of using PNA to connect with other users. Methods: The thesis work was conducted in two phases. The first phase was a review of the existing literature with literature synthesised into major themes. The second phase was an original qualitative study that used group sessions within a qualitative descriptive method and used thematic analysis to explore experiences of PNA use. Findings: The reviewed articles (n = 40) evolved into four major themes: risk, stigma, sexuality, and community. The theme of risk was overrepresented in the literature and comprised research that reviewed the sexual health risks of using PNA to meet partners. The review themes aligned closely with the four themes that emerged from participants' (n = 6) experiences that were revealed in the original qualitative study: community, hope, stigma, and doubt. The themes of hope and doubt were found to be driving forces in a cyclical pattern of use reported by the participants, wherein users will repeatedly experience cycling phases of app use and disuse. Conclusion: Phase one of this thesis work exposed a gap in the knowledge related to the process of gay men using PNA. Phase two began to fill that gap by exploring the process of using PNA and furthering academic knowledge of how gay men interact and experience PNA use. The knowledge created in this thesis may assist nurses by providing them with improved cultural understanding of gay men and facilitate open communication between nurses and gay clients.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore experiences related to dating application (app) use among gay and bisexual men who resided in the rural borderland states (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California). This study documented gay and bisexual men's lived experiences of dating app use in a rural region. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling. A recruitment link was sent to social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and dating sites such as Craigslist, Grindr, and Adam4Adam. A sample of 9 participants were recruited which include, 2 bisexual males, 7 gay males, at least 18 years of age, that lived in the borderland region. Designed as a phenomenological study, interviews were analyzed using a thematic analysis. Findings provide evidence for each theme found across the participant interviews. Five themes emerged from the data, the themes are: (1) Venue for self-discovery; (2) Searching for connection; (3) Masculinity; (4) Risky encounters; (5) Social (un)belonging. The participants provided significant exposures to the way that gay and bisexual males utilize gay dating apps. This study makes several significant contributions to the literature regarding the experiences of gay and bisexual men's dating app use and their experiences in the rural borderland.

The current study employed qualitative methodology to investigate the experiences of 12 men who came out online, using Facebook. Analysis of coding data yielded several key themes. First, gay men discussed a range of experiences that influenced their online disclosure including homophobia, internalized homophobia, and previous salient sexual identity disclosures. Participants also commonly expressed a variety of goals and concerns about coming out online, including improving relationships and loss of friends. Finally, gay men identified several benefits to coming out on Facebook, including increased efficiency in coming out as compared to face-to-face disclosures, increased authenticity, and decreased ambiguity about their sexuality. Results are discussed within the context of literature on men’s coming-out experiences, men and masculinity and online identity management.
