In recognizing that new teachers often feel disempowered by the subject expertise they bring into teaching, this book not only covers the training standards for NQTs and the Induction Standards, but takes the reader beyond this by fully exploring issues relating to subject knowledge in learning to teach. Divided into three sections the book covers: framing the subject - defining subject knowledge and focusing on questions about science as a school subject teaching the subject - looking at pedagogical, curricular and pupil knowledge science within the professional community - focusing on the place of science within the wider curriculum and the teaching community. This refreshing new book provides stimulating assistance to subject specialists, from new teachers of science in the early years of professional development to those on a PGCE course or in their induction year. It is also suitable for subject leaders with mentor responsibilities and Advanced Skills Teachers undertaking specialist inset and teaching support.

Science Teaching In Schools written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: Science and Technology Committee and has been published by The Stationery Office this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-11-05 with Education categories.

Following on from the Committee's earlier report (HLP 257, session 2005-06, ISBN 9780104009475) on science and mathematics teaching in secondary schools in England, this report sets out the Government's response to that report and the Committee's commentary on that response. Issues discussed include: the take-up of science and mathematics at GCSE and A-level, the provision of careers advice to students, student attitude and choice, problems in the recruitment and retention of teachers, the quality of teaching methods and the role of continuing professional development. The Committee concludes that science teaching in schools is vital to support innovation and growth in the UK economy, particularly given that the booming economies of China and India are supported by increasing numbers of well-qualified science graduates.

Impact Assessment Of Stem Initiatives In Improving Educational Outcomes written by Pallavi Amitava Banerjee and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-09 with Education categories.

Impact assessment of STEM initiatives in improving educational outcomes explores research evidence and labour market reports to show why successive governments think STEM education matters. It maps the policy background and the STEM crisis in the UK which led to the launch of the STEM informal education sector. These schemes funded by the government, educational charities and private organisations have now mushroomed at the local and national level. In the midst of so many activities for various age groups do we know what works or works better for specific group of students? Does one size fit all? The book provides a detailed report of a longitudinal national evaluation conducted in the UK by making use of official datasets. The activities evaluated here have not had a major influence on educational outcomes such as improved standardized national test results or increased STEM subject choices. The robust evaluation protocol described in this well-structured and thoughtful text will help schools to decide what works best for the students activity providers to evaluate long term outcomes for the activities they run researchers to replicate the protocol for similar activities in other settings Masters and PhD students understand how evidence from research can be used to inform policy and practice The results and implications combined with the recommendations made here will interest all those who are directly involved in the delivery of these enrichment and enhancement activities, practitioners using evidence, policy makers, the research community and schools wanting to run their own evaluations.

The Department for Education has made good progress in improving take-up and achievement in areas such as A-Level maths and GCSE Triple Science. However, there has been less success in increasing the number of science teachers, improving take-up of A-Level physics and raising the standards of school science facilities. There is evidence that pupils taking Triple Science GCSE are more likely than those studying combined science to choose science subjects at A-Level and to achieve higher grades. While starting from a low base, pupil take-up of the three individual sciences has increased by almost 150 per cent in the last five years. However, by June 2009, almost half of secondary schools still did not offer Triple Science. Take-up of chemistry and maths A-Level has already exceeded the targets for 2014 set by the Department, but take-up of physics A-Level has increased only slightly since 2005-06. Achievement increased across all science subjects and maths at A-Level between 2002-03 and 2009-10. Until recently, the Department had a target to ensure that all school laboratories were up to a good or excellent standard by 2010. However, it did not collect routine data to measure progress against this target, and the most recent research available found that science facilities were inadequate in around a quarter of secondary schools. Although recruitment of science graduates to train as specialist teachers has increased, the Department is not on course to meet the targets set by the previous Government for recruiting more mathematics and physics teachers by 2014.

The Effective Teaching of Secondary Science encourages the trainee teacher to develop effective skills for teaching science to secondary school pupils. The comprehensive coverage of topics and issues provides good foundations for trainee teachers who are encouraged to test and evaluate different techniques. Practical advice is offered in areas such as lesson planning, the preparation of worksheets, planning practical activities and safety in the laboratory. The book also discusses the use of information technology as well as multicultural and gender issues and the teaching of pupils with special needs. Much of the work covered is undepinned by areas of educational research such as educational theory and psychology and sociology of education. Information on the requirements of the national curriculum and on post-16 science courses is given and includes a number of assessment techniques for the problematic area of assessing science attainment target 1.
