De architectuurpublicisten Hilde de Haan en Ids Haagsma maakten een compacte, uiterst informatieve gebouwengids over een tot nu onbekend, bij leven publiciteitsschuw architectonisch genie: Jan de Jong (1917-2001) uit Schaijk. Deze blijkt, als een tovenaarsleerling van monnik-architect dom Hans van der Laan, diens leermeester in vele opzichten te hebben overtroffen. Van der Laan (1904-1991) is inmiddels wereldwijd bekend, om zijn architectuurtheorie rond het'plastische getal', om zijn boeken, om zijn verstilde kloosters zoals zijn eigen Benedictusberg (1960/68) in Vaals. Jan de Jong stond echter al 'naast' dom Van der Laan nog voor deze zijn eerste klooster bouwde. Eind jaren vijftig al ontstond tussen beide mannen een bijzondere chemie, waarbij de getalenteerd ambachtsman-architect De Jong de inzichten van Van der Laan in baanbrekend moderne gebouwen gestalte wisten te geven.

De Brabantse architect De Jong (1917-2001) was de tovenaarsleerling van monnik-architect dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991). Deze monnik is nu wereldberoemd, om zijn architectuurtheorie op basis van zijn 'plastische getal', en vooral om de paar verstilde kloosters die hij bouwde zoals zijn eigen abdij Benedictusberg (1956/67) in Vaals. De Jong was zijn meest briljante en uiterst productieve leerling. Onderzoek van de auteurs bracht aan het licht dat het vooral De Jong was die het plastische getal tot bloei bracht. Hij paste het toe in baanbrekend moderne architectuur, op een moment dat dom Van der Laan zelf nog nauwelijks bouwde. De monografie beschrijft het rijke en veelzijdige oeuvre van De Jong dat nu voor het eerst volledig is ontsloten, op een manier die het plastische getal voor iedereen toegankelijk maakt. De monografie bevat twee gebonden boeken, elk 277 pagina's. Deze delen zijn doorlopend genummerd maar inhoudelijk complementair. Deel 1 verhaalt over het leven van De Jong, en alle achtergronden, deel 2 toont gedetailleerd al het werk. De cassette voegt hieraan nog iets toe. Hierop is De Jongs belangrijkste instrumentarium afgebeeld, zijn 'spoorboekje' en zijn 'stedebouwkundige abacus', beide met matenreeksen van het plastische getal.

De laatste bloeiperiode van de kerkbouw in Noordwest-Europa voltrok zich in de eerste decennia na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Enerzijds moest de oorlogsschade worden gerepareerd, anderzijds zette de bevolkingsgroei aan tot de uitbreiding van dorpen en steden. Afhankelijk van de aanwezige religieuze denominatie(s) werden nieuwbouwwijken voorzien van één of meerdere kerkgebouwen. De spectaculaire opleving in de kerkbouw hield aan tot het midden van de jaren zestig toen toenemende ontkerkelijking en afnemend kerkbezoek zich stevig lieten voelen. Sacred spaces in contemporary Western culture are subject to a dynamics in which the traditional forms of ritual are increasingly marginalised and new forms emerge. The destruction of churches, the rise of increasingly multi-religious urban ritual spaces, the remarkable vitality of places of pilgrimage and war cemeteries and the growing popularity of lieux de memoire in general show the changing landscapes of ritual spaces in modern Western culture.This book aims at describing and analyzing the profound changes and developments that are presently taking place. In the main part of this volume the broad field of ritual spaces is explored in contributions on various modern 'sacred places'. The case studies range from traditional places of religious worship, to the Rothko Chapel in Houston, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Berlin Holocaust Memorial; from the Tor Tre Teste Millenium Church in Rome to the Columbine School Shooting Memorial in Colorado, the memorials for Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh and virtual ritual sites.
