Is religion dying out in Western societies? Is personal spirituality taking its place? Both stories are inadequate. Institutional religion is not simply coming to an end in Western societies. Rather, its assets and properties are redistributed: large parts of the church have gone into liquidation. Religion is crossing the boundaries of the parish and appears in other social contexts. In the fields of leisure, health care and contemporary culture, religion has an unexpected currency. The metaphor of liquidation provides an alternative to approaches that merely perceive the decline of religion or a spiritual revolution. Religion is becoming liquid. By examining a number of case studies in the Netherlands and beyond, including World Youth Day, television, spiritual centers, chaplaincy, mental healthcare, museums and theatre, this book develops a fresh way to look at religion in late modernity and produces new questions for theological and sociological debate. It is both an exercise in sociology and an exercise in practical theology conceived as the engaged study of religious praxis. As such, the aim is not only to get a better understanding of what is going on, but also to critique one-sided views and to provide alternative perspectives for those who are active in the religious field or its surroundings.

This book examines how prisons meet challenges of religious diversity, in an era of increasing multiculturalism and globalization. Social scientists studying corrections have noted the important role that religious or spiritual practice can have on rehabilitation, particularly for inmates with coping with stress, mental health and substance abuse issues. In the past, the historical figure of the prison chaplain operated primarily in a Christian context, following primarily a Christian model. Increasingly, prison populations (inmates as well as employees) display diversity in their ethnic, cultural, religious and geographic backgrounds. As public institutions, prisons are compelled to uphold the human rights of their inmates, including religious freedom. Prisons face challenges in approaching religious plurality and secularism, and maintaining prisoners' legal rights to religious freedom. De half-ironische, half-serieuze titel van deze bundel verwijst naar de communicatie met gedetineerden en stond op een verzoekbriefje, waarmee een gedetineerde zich tot een geestelijk verzorger wendde. Zo'n tekst geeft te denken. Is een 'normaal gesprek' voor een gedetineerde misschien een uitzonderlijke gebeurtenis? Binnen het kader van deze vraagstelling denkt de Tilburgse theoloog Erik Borgman na over de vraag, of en wanneer er sprake kan zijn van een 'bevrijdende God' in de gevangenis. Vervult het justitiepastoraat een nuttige functie in een justitieel systeem dat recidive wil terugdringen, of gaat het in het Evangelie om iets anders? Zijn vraag wordt hoogst actueel en controversieel waar hij verwijst naar de recente Belgische casus van Michelle Martin, medeplichtige van Marc Dutroux. De pastoraal theoloog Stefan Gärtner zoomt in op de vreemdheid die onvermijdelijk een rol speelt in de communicatie tussen de justitiepastor en de gevangenen.

De eerste reeks van de hier gepubliceerde bijdragen staat in het kader van een driejarige cyclus van het justitiepastoraat in Nederland. Die cyclus richtte de aandacht op de communicatie van geestelijk verzorgers bij justitie in de drie relaties die zij in hun werk onderhouden: 1- de communicatie in het bijstaan van gedetineerden, en de communicatie voortkomend vanuit hun dubbele loyaliteit namelijk jegens 2- de overheid en jegens 3- hun ‘zendende instantie’. 0De betrekking van de geestelijk verzorger tot de zendende instantie staat centraal in deze bundel en rondt de cyclus af, nadat eerder de overheid ('Twee heren dienen', 2011) en de gedetineerden ('Graag een normaal gesprek', 2012) centraal stonden. De eerste vijf bijdragen zijn grotendeels uitwerkingen van lezingen op de studiedagen 2013; een verdere bijdrage is mede gebaseerd op materiaal dat door rooms-katholieke geestelijke verzorgers tijdens hun studiedagen is ingebracht. De centrale thematiek die de bijdragen in dit thematisch deel verbindt, is de opdracht van de geestelijk verzorger om de werelden van 'binnen' en 'buiten', gevangenis en kerk, gevangenisbewoner en burger in de samenleving en de daarmee verbonden waarderingen en houdingen (vertrouwen/wantrouwen, humaan/inhumaan, crimineel/ medeburger) met elkaar te verbinden. De geestelijk verzorger heeft in zijn werk niet alleen te maken met dit grensverkeer - hij of zij praktiseert dit ook zelf. 0Naast dit thematisch deel bevat de bundel nog een bijdrage over vergeving van de theoloog De Vries, een artikel over de relatie tussen onvolmaaktheid, menselijkheid en barmhartigheid van de filosoof De Wit, een eerste resultaat van een onderzoek naar boosheid bij gedetineerden door justitiepredikante Terlouw-Sterk en een weergave van het onderzoek naar de taak van de justitiepastor aangaande humaniteit tijdens detentie waarop justitieaalmoezenier Van Eijk in 2013 promoveerde.
