Ist die Utopie tot? Oder ist Utopie zeitlos? Was kann, wenn die Utopie weiter lebt, Utopie in der heutigen Zeit bedeuten? Im ersten Teil des Buches schafft Peter R. Werder mit einem Überblick über die problemgeschichtliche Entwicklung des Utopiebegriffs seit dem 16. Jahrhundert die Grundlage, um solche Fragen anzugehen. Den Fokus legt er dabei auf die Rolle der Utopien im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert. Der Autor geht auf die Utopiegeschichten sowie die Theorie der Utopie ein und grenzt diese gegen den Begriff “Schlaraffenland” aber auch gegen verschieden Begriffe, die oft als Utopien bezeichnet werden, ab. Im zweiten Teil wird die Analyse der Gegenwart vorgenommen: Der These von Marcuse, die Utopie sei heute tot, wird widersprochen. Dies ist mit Beispielen verdeutlicht, wie etwa die fokussierenden Entwürfe (Ökologie, Feminismus, Architektur) oder die Entwürfe des Raumes (Cyberspace, zum Beispiel Second Life). Etwas genauer erläutert wird die Utopie “bolo bolo” vom Schweizer Autor P.M., die als eine der wenigen Werke der Gegenwart auf traditionelle Art inhaltlich neue Ansätze liefert. Im dritten Teil wird die gängige Utopiedefinition aufgebrochen. Die Grundüberlegung: Die eigentliche Utopie ist ausserhalb des kapitalistischen Systems zu finden, da die Alternative innerhalb dieses Systems das System nur stärkt und nicht ein anderes neues hervorbringt. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob das Ziel des widerspruchsfreien Handelns als Utopie formuliert werden müsste, da bei so kurzen Halbwertszeiten von Wissen und der praktisch absoluten Informationstransparenz der Gegenwart der Widerspruch im Alltag ebenso transparent ist.
