De levensboom heeft bovendien in de meeste culturen dezelfde betekenis.

De Kybalion verscheen voor het eerst in de Verenigde Staten in 1908 bij de 'Yogi Publication Society' onder het pseudoniem van de 'The Three Initiates'. De openingspagina vertelt dat het boek is opgedragen aan "Hermes Trismegistus known by the ancient Egyptians as "The Great Great" and "Master of Masters"". Hermes Trismegistus wordt beschouwd als de grondlegger van het Hermetisme, een filosofische esoterische leer die aan hem is opgedragen. De driemaal grote of Trismegistus verklaart dan ook het pseudoniem van de Kybalion. De Kybalion, dat een Hermetisch geschrift wil zijn, verwijst naar Hermes Trismegistus. Deze vertaling is niet de vertaling van het oorspronkelijk boek, wel de teksten. De teksten werden voorzien van een commentaar aangepast aan de esoterische kennis van vandaag. Dit boek bevat eveneens de in 2011 vrijgegeven aanvullende teksten van Atkinson en zijn dus een primeur.
