Es stellt daruber hinaus Interpretationsschemata bereit, die auf viele gesellschaftliche Phanomene anwendbar sind. Fur die Antike, die neben dem Geld keine anderen "Massenmedien" kennt, kann das in besonderer Weise gelten. Umso wichtiger ist es, dass man sich in den Altertumswissenschaften daruber verstandigt, was man eigentlich meint, wenn man Geld als Medium bezeichnet. Aus je unterschiedlichen Perspektiven gehen die Beitrager der Frage nach, was in ihrer Disziplin "Geld als Medium" bedeuten kann. In den verschiedenen Zugangen von Alter Geschichte, Archaologie, Klassischer Philologie und Rechtsgeschichte wird die Konflikttrachtigkeit, aber auch das analytische Potenzial der Pramisse "Geld als Medium" erkennbar. Benedikt Eckhardt, geb. 1983, Studium der Geschichtswissenschaft und der Germanistik, ist Althistoriker. Katharina Martin, geb. 1971, Studium der Klassischen Archaologie, Alten Geschichte und Arabistik, ist Archaologin mit Schwerpunkt Ikonographie und Numismatik. Beide arbeiten als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter in der Arbeitsgruppe "Geld als Medium in der Antike" im Exzellenzcluster "Religion und Politik" an der Westfalischen Wilhelms-Universitat Munster.

Large-scale economic change such as the rise of coinage occurred during the Persian-dominated centuries (6th-4th centuries BCE) in the Eastern Mediterranean and ancient Near East. How do the biblical texts of the time respond to such developments? In this study, Peter Altmann lays out foundational economic conceptions from the ancient Near East and earlier biblical traditions in order to show how Persian-period biblical texts build on these traditions to address the challenges of their day. Economic issues are central for how Ezra and Nehemiah approach the topics of temple building and of Judean self-understanding, and economics are also important for other Persian-period texts. Following significant interaction with the material culture and extra-biblical texts, the author devotes special attention to the ascendancy of economics and its theological and identity implications as structuring metaphors for divine action and human community in the Persian period.

This monograph tracks the development of the socio-economic stance of early Mormonism, an American Millenarian Restorationist movement, through the first fourteen years of the church’s existence, from its incorporation in the spring of 1830 in New York, through Ohio and Missouri and Illinois, up to the lynching of its prophet Joseph Smith Jr in the summer of 1844. Mormonism used a new revelation, the Book of Mormon, and a new apostolically inspired church organization to connect American antiquities to covenant-theological salvation history. The innovative religious strategy was coupled with a conservative socio-economic stance that was supportive of technological innovation. This analysis of the early Mormon church uses case studies focused on socio-economic problems, such as wealth distribution, the financing of publication projects, land trade and banking, and caring for the poor. In order to correct for the agentive overtones of standard Mormon historiography, both in its supportive and in its detractive stance, the explanatory models of social time from Fernand Braudel’s classic work on the Mediterranean are transferred to and applied in the nineteenth-century American context.

The transition between the 2nd and the 1st millennium BC was an era of deep economic changes in the ancient Near East. An increasing monetization of transactions, a broader use of silver, the management of the resources of temples through entrepreneurs, the development of new trade circuits and an expanding private, small-scale economy, transformed the role previously played by institutions such as temples and royal palaces. The 17 essays collected here analyze the economic transformations which affected the old dominant powers of the Late Bronze Age, their adaptation to a new economic environment, the emergence of new economic actors and the impact of these changes on very different social sectors and geographic areas, from small communities in the oases of the Egyptian Western Desert to densely populated urban areas in Mesopotamia. Egypt was not an exception. Traditionally considered as a conservative and highly hierarchical and bureaucratic society, Egypt shared nevertheless many of these characteristics and tried to adapt its economic organization to the challenges of a new era. In the end, the emergence of imperial super-powers (Assyria, Babylonia, Persia and, to a lesser extent, Kushite and Saite Egypt) can be interpreted as the answer of former palatial organizations to the economic and geopolitical conditions of the early Iron Age. A new order where competition for the control of flows of wealth and of strategic trading areas appears crucial.
