Gellish English is a powerful Open Source language and ontology for electronic data storage and data exchange in a neutral and system independent way. Since long data storage and data communication lack a common standard universal data model as well as a common data language for database users. Various solutions have been proposed. However, those solutions either have a limited scope and are mutually incompatible or are difficult to implement. This book presents an integral solution to this problem in the form of standard Gellish English and a knowledge base, written in Gellish, whereas it is relatively easy to implement. Gellish English is the English variant of Gellish and is a structured subset of natural English. Gellish is an extension and integration of the concepts defined in various ISO and non-ISO standard data models and dictionary standards. For example, it integrates concepts from IEC 50, ISO 31, ISO 1000, ISO 1131-3, ISO 1998, ISO 10303, ISO 13584 and ISO 15926 together with material from other sources.

Semantic modeling in a formalized language provides a route towards the benefits of universal data exchange, data integration and interoperability of systems. Its application will also reduce the need for and cost of data conversions. Using a formal language enables expressing information and knowledge, including also possibilities, requirements and definitions in a system independent, unambiguous, human as well as computer interpretable way. The book describes Formal English and other members of the Gellish family of formalized languages. It also describes their formal taxonomic dictionaries and gives guidance on creating how high quality information models that can be read by any computer application that can interpret and operate on expressions in the formal language. The book also describes a Gellish expression format and syntax for storing and exchanging information and thus provides a method for the creation of universal semantic databases and for data communication in a common language.

The geosciences are one of the fields leading the way in advancing semantic technologies. This book continues the dialogue and feedback between the geoscience and semantic web communities. Increasing data volumes within the geosciences makes it no longer practical to copy data and perform local analysis. Hypotheses are now being tested through online tools that combine and mine pools of data. This evolution in the way research is conducted is commonly referred to as e-Science. As e-Science has flourished, the barriers to free and open access to data have been lowered and the need for semantics has been heighted. As the volume, complexity, and heterogeneity of data resources grow, geoscientists are creating new capabilities that rely on semantic approaches.
