Tom Lanoye (1958) is romancier, dichter, columnist, scenarist en theaterauteur. Dit jaar is het precies dertig jaar geleden dat Lanoye, na een paar eigenbeheeruitgaafjes, officieel debuteerde in de Nederlandstalige literatuur. Hij brak door bij het grote publiek met romans als Kartonnen dozen, Het goddelijke monster en Sprakeloos, en toneelstukken als Ten oorlog, Fort Europa en De Russen! Heeft Koos van Zomeren met De levende have een bestiarium geschreven? Niet in de strikte middeleeuwse betekenis van het woord. Er trekt ook geen stoet verzonnen beesten - draken, griffioenen, eenhoorns en fniksen - aan ons voorbij. Maar net als zijn middeleeuwse vakbroeders brengt Van Zomeren in dit boek nagenoeg de hele beestenboel van de Lage Landen in kaart en evenmin als zij schuwt hij de moraal. De natuur is wreed, stelt Van Zomeren. 'Maar de vraag is niet hoe de natuur voor dieren zorgt, de vraag is hoe wij voor dieren zorgen (...) nu wij de verantwoordelijkheid zo gretig overnemen.' En hij pleit voor regels - regels die 'in orde' zijn. Van Zomeren schrijft over de hond in zijn mand en de koe in haar wei; over zoogdieren, vogels, vissen, reptielen en kleiner grut; over dieren in de 'vrije natuur' en de bio-industrie, de dierentuin en het dierenlaboratorium. 'Het schort aan een werkelijk, breedgedragen medeleven met dieren in de bio-industrie, en het schort evenzeer aan een werkelijk, breedgedragen begrip voor de positie van dieren in wat we wild noemen.' De conclusie mag duidelijk zijn: 'Ik ben al met al niet onverdeeld positief over de maatschappelijke context waarin dieren leven.' Ine Hendriks heeft de verhalen voorzien van prachtige illustraties.
