Der konfessionelle Religionsunterricht zeigt wenig Bekenntnisgebundenheit in konkreten Unterrichtssituationen, ein 'Wir' ist kaum erkennbar. Spätestens mit der Studie von Englert u.a. (2014) wurde dies deutlich. Die Entstehung einer Gemeinschaft ist Thema des Buches Exodus. Israel entsteht nicht nur in Abgrenzung von Ägypten, sondern auch in Ausrichtung auf seinen Gott. Grenzgängerinnen wie die Tochter Pharaos oder die hebräischen Hebammen halten die Grenzen der Gemeinschaft offen und nutzen Vielfalt kreativ. Hier liegt Potenzial für das Nachdenken über Gemeinschaft, heterogenitätssensibel aufgestellt, durchlässig und auf der Suche nach gemeinsamer Ausrichtung. Die Gottesperspektive bleibt dabei im Blick. Exegese trifft auf Religionspädagogik und setzt so Anregungen für die Bibeldidaktik frei.

Among its major contributions are a detailed text-critical analysis that frequently adopts readings of the Old Greek and Old Latin and, at the same time, a reexamination of the variant chronologies for the kings of Israel and Judah that argues for the priority of the one in the Masoretic Text. The book presents a new theory of the compositional history of these chapters that ascribes them mostly to the hand of a postexilic "Prophetic Narrator" who reworked older legenda, especially about Elisha, and effectively shaped Kings into the work we have today.
