VET students and their teachers have unique insights into the supply of demand for skills for sustainability, and this viewpoint can contribute, now and in to the future, to the further development of skills for sustainability in Australia. In this research skills for sustainability are broadly conceived as including skills for social, economic and environmental sustainability - a triple bottom line approach. The study provides evidence on the actual depth and breadth of the take-up of these skills within Australian training organisations and workplaces. In summary, the results show that apprentices, trainees and their teachers cared a great deal about soil, economic and environmental sustainability; Supply was closely aligned to social demand for skills for sustainability so that demand for skills for sustainability from VET students was almost entirely met; There are important differences in the teaching, learning and utilisation of skills for sustainability that are related to gender and age; and In-class learning of environmental skills has increased over time and now slightly outweighs learning of these skills at work, however community learning of these skills outweighs both.

The very first Green Party was established in Tasmania, Australia less than forty years ago - a short time in political history. Since 1972, Green parties have gained seats at the federal, provincial or state, and municipal levels worldwide. Greens have also gained federal seats in France and Sweden, as well as acquiring political influence in Australia, and more recently, Canada. Specifically, Australia has federal and state Greens, while polling data reveals that since 1991, Canadian Greens have shown gains in the popular vote. Notwithstanding their electoral successes, the two countries Green parties have also had a notable effect on the publics conception of environmental issues. Commonwealth Greens provides a paradigmatic, comparative analysis of the Green parties of Canada and Australia, providing policymakers, activists and academics with an understanding of the beliefs that shape Green Party action, while offering the general public an overview of Green thought.

In 2009, the CO2 Energy Emissions Index found that Australia had overtaken the USA to become the largest per capita emitter of greenhouse gases in the world - a legacy of dependence on coal-fired power stations, the widespread adoption of conventional farming techniques, heavy reliance on vehicles powered by fossil fuel, 'dirty' industrial practices and a growing mountain of waste. GREEN AUSTRALIA examines the ways in which Australians are attempting to reduce their ecological footprint both at home and at work. Using case studies and up-to-date research it demonstrates that, although much more needs to be done if Australia is to secure a carbon-neutral future, some Green shoots are beginning to emerge.

Intended by the author to serve as "a kind of handbook" to his folio work The birds of Australia, published in 1848. See Introduction, v.1, page 6, and Preface, v. 1, page v: "During that period [since publication of The birds of Australia] many new species have been discovered, and much additional information acquired respecting those comprised therein; consequently it appeared to me that a careful résumé of the entire subject would be acceptable to the possessors of the former edition, as well as to the many persons in Australia who are now turning their attention to the ornithology of the country in which they are resident."
