Excerpt from Gen. Scott's Guide in Mexico: A Biographical Sketch of Col. Noah E. Smith A few weeks ago there died in the village of Laconia a man with a history. It was he of whom Major Gaines spoke in a speech made in Boston in 1848: "I have been to New Hampshire. I went there on a pilgrimage. I went there to pay my respects and pour out my gratitude to a New Hampshire man, whom I met in Mexico, or rather who met me; who visited me in my dungeon; who found me 'naked and he clothed me, sick and in prison, and he ministered unto me.' I went there to render him my gratitude for kindness done me in a far-distant laud." The man thus pictured was Noah E. Smith. To him the opportunity came to render extraordinary service to his country - services the importance of which were appreciated probably by but few of those among whom he spent the later and uneventful years of his life. For several years the writer of this was almost daily associated with this grand old gentleman. Our conversation often recurred to his experiences in Mexico, and this sketch is drawn from copious memoranda made at those times with a view of preserving a record too valuable and interesting to be lost - a record which fairly entitles Noah E. Smith to be ranked among New Hampshire's notable sons. Birth and Early Life. Noah E. Smith was born in Meredith in 1808. The Mexican-American War (1846-48) found Americans on new terrain. A republic founded on the principle of armed defense of freedom was now going to war on behalf of Manifest Destiny, seeking to conquer an unfamiliar nation and people. Through an examination of rank-and-file soldiers, Paul Foos sheds new light on the war and its effect on attitudes toward other races and nationalities that stood in the way of American expansionism. Drawing on wartime diaries and letters not previously examined by scholars, Foos shows that the experience of soldiers in the war differed radically from the positive, patriotic image trumpeted by political and military leaders seeking recruits for a volunteer army. Promised access to land, economic opportunity, and political equality, the enlistees instead found themselves subjected to unusually harsh discipline and harrowing battle conditions. As a result, some soldiers adapted the rhetoric of Manifest Destiny to their own purposes, taking for themselves what had been promised, often by looting the Mexican countryside or committing racial and sexual atrocities. Others deserted the army to fight for the enemy or seek employment in the West. These acts, Foos argues, along with the government's tacit acceptance of them, translated into a more violent, damaging variety of Manifest Destiny.

James L. Freaner is one of the most important unknown Americans in our nation’s history. Freaner gained fame throughout the country during the Mexican War while covering General Winfield Scott’s campaign. As one of America’s first war correspondents, Freaner’s letters appeared in newspapers under the byline “Mustang,” and his reports from the front included information unavailable elsewhere. Among Freaner’s scoops were the publication of complete casualty lists (long before official reports became public), detailed battle descriptions, and observations on postwar Mexico. Despite his widespread fame as a reporter, Freaner’s greatest contribution to the United States came during a conversation with Nicholas P. Trist, negotiator of the peace treaty with Mexico. After Trist had passed along an outrageous proposal from the Mexican commissioners, he was recalled, but Freaner convinced Trist to ignore the order and begin a new round of negotiations. Trist resumed, concluded the war, and added California, Nevada, Utah, and other territory to a growing country. This acquisition was second in size only to the Louisiana Purchase and was a direct result of James Freaner persuading Trist to brazenly conclude a treaty when he had no authority to do so. From the Halls of the Montezumas is a complete compilation of Freaner’s Mexican War reporting. Editors Alan D. Gaff and Donald H. Gaff have annotated the text with footnotes identifying people, places, and events, and also have added illustrations of key figures and maps. They supplement Freaner’s dispatches with biographical information that ranges from his early career to his journey to the gold fields of California and his untimely death at the hands of Indians in California in 1852.
