Controversy about women in the military continues, yet women's relations with the military go far beyond whether they serve in the ranks. Gender Camouflage brings together a diverse array of authors to explore the controversy surrounding women's military service, to examine the invisibility of civilian women who support the institution, and to expose the military's efforts to camouflage their support and contributions. Contributors first consider nurses, servicewomen, military academy students, female veterans, and lesbians. The focus then shifts to military wives, women employed by the DoD, and female civilian military instructors whose work is less visible but no less essential to the institution. The book also examines the experiences of women outside of the military, such as "comfort women" near U.S. bases, women engaged in peacework, and women workers affected by military spending in the federal budget. Analytic chapters are juxtaposed with first-person narratives by women who have actually been there, including a member of the first gender-integrated class at West Point, the first female civilian instructors at the U.S. Naval Academy, and an African American Air Force Nurse Corps veteran. Reveals the different ways women navigate the traditionally masculine environment of the military Drawing on surveys and interviews with almost 300 female military personnel, Melissa Herbert explores how women's everyday actions, such as choice of uniform, hobby, or social activity, involve the creation and re-creation of what it means to be a woman, and particularly a woman soldier. Do women feel pressured to be "more masculine," to convey that they are not a threat to men's jobs or status and to avoid being perceived as lesbians? She also examines the role of gender and sexuality in the maintenance of the male-defined military institution, proposing that, more than sexual harassment or individual discrimination, it is the military's masculine ideology--which views military service as the domain of men and as a mechanism for the achievement of manhood--which serves to limit women's participation in the military has increased dramatically. In the wake of armed conflict involving female military personnel and several sexual misconduct scandals, much attention has focused on what life is like for women in the armed services. Few, however, have examined how these women negotiate an environment that has been structured and defined as masculine.

There are many people who experience invisible, and often undiagnosed, disabilities and conditions which affect their everyday lives. On the surface, it might not be immediately obvious that someone perhaps has a different way of thinking, experiencing or processing the world around them. Having an invisible disability usually means that it is difficult to provide concrete, visible evidence for it and it can be perceived as ‘not real’ by other people. Indeed, some individuals can often be made to feel they are not good enough, and may end up masking or hiding their difficulties in order to just get by in day-to-day life without being judged. In this collection, we introduce and educate Young Minds about a range of “invisible” conditions, for example mental health conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, autism, chronic pain conditions, intellectual disabilities, stuttering, and many others. We also highlight some of the wider challenges faced within society, such as the lack of understanding from other people, and discuss how Young Minds can potentially support their friends and family who might be experiencing some of these disabilities or conditions. This collection covers what Young Minds could learn about what it means to have an invisible condition and how it can impact on relationships, education, thinking, communication, emotions, behaviours, and generally navigating everyday life. Further, some people might be unwilling to seek help and share their concerns with others, because they are worried that others don’t really understand what life is like for them. We hope that this collection helps those without an invisible condition to think carefully about how they can make the world a more supportive and inclusive place for everyone.

Since 1845, the United States Naval Academy has prepared professional military leaders at its Annapolis, Maryland, campus. Although it remains steeped in a culture of tradition and discipline, the Academy is not impervious to change. Dispelling the myth that the Academy is a bastion of tradition unmarked by progress, H. Michael Gelfand examines challenges to the Naval Academy's culture from both inside and outside the Academy's walls between 1949 and 2000, an era of dramatic social change in American history. Drawing on more than two hundred oral histories, extensive archival research, and his own participatory observation at the Academy, Gelfand demonstrates that events at Annapolis reflect the transformation of American culture and society at large in the Cold War and post-Cold War periods. In eight chapters, he discusses recruiting and minority midshipmen, the end of mandatory attendance at religious services, women's experiences as they sought and achieved admission and later served as midshipmen, and the responses of multiple generations of midshipmen to societal changes, particularly during the Vietnam War era. This cultural history not only sheds light on events at the Naval Academy but also offers a novel perspective on democratic ideals in the United States.
