Excerpt from General Catalogue of Bates College and Cobb Divinity School, 1863-1915 Cobb Divinity School was established at Bates in 1870, and for thirty seven years was maintained as a department of the college. It has been the aim of your committee to get as complete a record of the graduates of this school as practicable, not only for the use of this catalogue but for all future ones. It was deemed advisable to compile a record of those students who attended Bates but did not complete the full four years course. This was attempted for two reasons; first, to show that the college has con tributed to the education of a large number of students not included in its list of graduates; and, second, to show a proper appreciation of their devotion and loyalty to the college and to strengthen the hope that their interest in it will always abide. The past few years have given proof that many of them are among its most loyal friends. The abbreviations used will be readily understood without explana tion. In connection with degrees and professorships held in the college, to avoid the constant repetition of the word Bates, it has frequently been omitted where it can be clearly understood. The work has been a difficult one, and many desired facts could not be obtained; yet we hope what we have accomplished will be appreciated. College records, catalogues, and the Bates Student have been freely consulted, together with Genealogies and Town Histories. Circulars have been sent to the graduates and non-graduates, where their addresses were known, and in many cases several times. Great assistance has been rendered by graduates and friends of the college. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From its foundation in 1826, UCL embraced a progressive and pioneering spirit. It was the first university in England to admit students regardless of religion and made higher education affordable and accessible to a much broader section of society. It was also effectively the first university to welcome women on equal terms with men. From the outset UCL showed a commitment to innovative ideas and new methods of teaching and research. This book charts the history of UCL from 1826 through to the present day, highlighting its many contributions to society in Britain and around the world. It covers the expansion of the university through the growth in student numbers and institutional mergers. It documents shifts in governance throughout the years and the changing social and economic context in which UCL operated, including challenging periods of reconstruction after two World Wars. Today UCL is one of the powerhouses of research and teaching, and a truly global university. It is currently seventh in the QS World University Rankings. This completely revised and updated edition features a new chapter based on interviews with key individuals at UCL. It comes at a time of ambitious development for UCL with the establishment of an entirely new campus in East London, UCL East, and Provost Michael Arthur’s ‘UCL 2034’ strategy which aims to secure the university’s long-term future and commits UCL to delivering global impact.

City written by Douglas W. Rae and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-01 with History categories.

How did neighborhood groceries, parish halls, factories, and even saloons contribute more to urban vitality than did the fiscal might of postwar urban renewal? With a novelist’s eye for telling detail, Douglas Rae depicts the features that contributed most to city life in the early “urbanist” decades of the twentieth century. Rae’s subject is New Haven, Connecticut, but the lessons he draws apply to many American cities. City: Urbanism and Its End begins with a richly textured portrait of New Haven in the early twentieth century, a period of centralized manufacturing, civic vitality, and mixed-use neighborhoods. As social and economic conditions changed, the city confronted its end of urbanism first during the Depression, and then very aggressively during the mayoral reign of Richard C. Lee (1954–70), when New Haven led the nation in urban renewal spending. But government spending has repeatedly failed to restore urban vitality. Rae argues that strategies for the urban future should focus on nurturing the unplanned civic engagements that make mixed-use city life so appealing and so civilized. Cities need not reach their old peaks of population, or look like thriving suburbs, to be once again splendid places for human beings to live and work.

This Nonviolent Stuff Ll Get You Killed written by Charles E. Cobb and has been published by Basic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-03 with History categories.

Visiting Martin Luther King, Jr. at the peak of the civil rights movement, the journalist William Worthy almost sat on a loaded pistol. “Just for self-defense,” King assured him. One of King's advisors remembered the reverend's home as “an arsenal.” Like King, many nonviolent activists embraced their constitutional right to self-protection—yet this crucial dimension of the civil rights struggle has been long ignored. In This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed, civil rights scholar Charles E. Cobb, Jr. reveals how nonviolent activists and their allies kept the civil rights movement alive by bearing—and, when necessary, using—firearms. Whether patrolling their neighborhoods, garrisoning their homes, or firing back at attackers, these men and women were crucial to the movement's success, as were the weapons they carried. Drawing on his firsthand experiences in the Southern Freedom Movement and interviews with fellow participants, Cobb offers a controversial examination of the vital role guns have played in securing American liberties.
