The valorous but troubled career of the Civil War general best known for defending Little Round Top and averting a Union defeat at Gettysburg. The lieutenant colonel of a New York regiment and rising star in the Army of the Potomac, Gouverneur K. Warren performed heroically at Gettysburg. For his service at Bristoe Station and Mine Run, he was awarded command of the Fifth Corps for the 1864 Virginia campaign. But Warren’s peculiarities of temperament and personality put a cloud over his service at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania and cost him the confidence of his superiors, Grant and Meade. He was summarily relieved of his command by Philip Sheridan after winning the Battle of Five Forks, just eight days before Appomattox. Warren continued as an engineer of distinction in the Army after the war, but he was determined to clear his name before a board of inquiry, which conducted an exhaustive investigation into the battle, Warren’s conduct, and Sheridan’s arbitrary action. However, the findings of the court vindicating Warren were not made public until shortly after his death. For this major biography of Gouverneur Warren, David M. Jordan utilizes Warren’s own voluminous collection of letters, papers, orders, and other items saved by his family, as well as the letters and writings of such contemporaries as his aide and brother-in-law Washington Roebling, Andrew Humphreys, Winfield Hancock, George Gordon Meade, and Ulysses S. Grant. Jordan presents a vivid account of the life and times of a complex military figure.

Excerpt from General G. K Warren We come now to the battle of Five Forks. The Operations which culminated in this decisive action are fully established by sworn testimony before the Court of inquiry which General warren, after nearly fifteen years of persistent effort, succeeded in obtaining from the President. Space permits a brief summary only of the more salient points; but history cannot now fail to do him ample justice. At sunset of March 31 the Fifth Corps occupied the extreme left of the Union position; and General Sheridan's cavalry was at Dinwiddie Court House - distant about five miles to the left and rear. Both had been severely attacked during the day, and the latter was still confronted by infantry and cavalry. At P. M. General warren himself suggested that he be allowed to move in force against the rear of the enemy operating against General Sheridan. On his own responsibility, as early as 5 P. M., he had dispatched a strong brigade with orders to attack that force; and in consequence of this movement the Confederates withdrew during the night from General Sheridan's front. Union Major General Gouverneur Warren participated in almost every major battle in the Civil War's Eastern Theater, from Big Bethel to Five Forks. He was held in such high esteem that he was often looked upon as the Union general most responsible for the victory at Gettysburg, and was considered the logical replacement for George Gordon Meade as commanding general of the Army of the Potomac. However, within days of the war's end he was relieved in disgrace on the battlefield by General Phil Sheridan. Warren spent the next fifteen years seeking the activation of a Court of Inquiry that he believed would vindicate his conduct. This book is the story of that court.

History is indeed written by the victors, and it has not been kind to the memory of Maj. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren. The traditional image of Warren as a self-important, sullen, and cautious commander who, despite his many talents, was unreliable in a crisis was cemented into place by Gens. Phil Sheridan and Ulysses S. Grant--the two men who removed him from command. The Soldiers' General: Major General Gouverneur K. Warren and the Civil War, by Paula C. Walker and Robert I Girardi, offers readers a thorough examination of his record and a chance to weigh the facts for themselves. In May of 1864, Warren was regarded by his superiors as the best corps commander in the Army of the Potomac. One high-placed staff officer described the bold, courageous, and accomplished engineer as "the only man of inborn originality in the army." Commanding generals Joseph Hooker and George G. Meade relied upon Warren's judgment and counsel during the Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Mine Run campaigns. But something went wrong during the war's final months. After leading his corps to a decisive victory at Five Forks on April 1, 1865, General Sheridan accused Warren of deliberate slowness and timidity and with General Grant's blessing, relieved him of command. Using hundreds of primary sources and other rarely seen documents and accounts, Walker and Girardi detail Warren's military record, including his rise to corps command, removal, and subsequent fight for justice. As the record demonstrates, Sheridan and Grant despised Warren's independent nature and criticism, and ultimately manufactured excuses that led to his removal. Unfortunately for Warren, Lee's surrender and Lincoln's assassination overshadowed his plight. Warren spent the rest of his life trying to correct the historical record, but pleas for a court of inquiry were ignored or denied until Grant left the presidency. By the time a court published its findings that Sheridan's actions were unjustified, Warren was dead. The Soldiers' General: Major General Gouverneur K. Warren and the Civil War is solid military and legal history that clarifies the historical record and deserves a place on every Civil War bookshelf.

Excerpt from Findings of the Court of Inquiry: And Reiews of the Judge-Advocate-General and of the General of the Army, in the Case of Major-General G. K. Warren The court, after mature deliberation on the evidence adduced, and in accordance with the requirements of the order convening it, submits the following as its report of the facts and its opinion in the case of Lieut. Col. G. K. Warren, United States Corps of Engineers, as regards his conduct as Major-General United States Volunteers, commanding the Fifth Army Corps at the battle of Five Forks, Va., April 1, 1865, and as regards the operations of his command on that day and the day previous, so far as relates to his, Lieutenant-Colonel Warren's, conduct, or to the imputations and accusations against him. Report. The First Imputation is found in an extract from General Grant's report, on page 1137 of the report of the Honorable Secretary of War to the first session of the Thirty-ninth Congress, as follows (see, also, Record, page 48): "On the morning of the 31st, General Warren reported favorably to getting possession of the White Oak road, and was directed to do so. To accomplish this, he moved with one division instead of his whole corps, which was attacked by the enemy in superior force and driven back on the second division before it had time to form, and it in turn forced back upon the third division; when the enemy was checked. A division of the Second Corps was immediately sent to his support, the enemy driven back with heavy loss, and possession of the White Oak road gained." The facts on this point appear from the evidence to be the following: At 7:30 p. m., on March 30, 1865, General Meade, then commanding the Army of the Potomac, telegraphed to Lieutenant-General Grant as follows: Lt. Gen'l Grant: I send dispatch just received from Warren; line working badly. I think his suggestion the best thing we can do under existing circumstances - that is, let Humphrey's relieve Griffin & let Warren move on to the White Oak road & endeavor to turn enemy's right - as I understand Warren - Ayres is now between S. & W. Dabney's, liable to be isolated he must either be supported or withdrawn; by adopting the proposed plan he will be supported by the whole of the 5th Corps. & they ought to overawe any opposition the enemy can make, except from their entrenchments. The Roman numbers attached to this and the other dispatches, herein quoted, are the same that these dispatches bear in the four series of dispatches beginning at page 1239, where, attached to each, will be found the evidence of its receipt and correctness as a copy. - L.
