Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from General Principles of the Method of Least Squares: With Applications In order that this curve may represent exactly the distri bution of the errors in any given series of observations it ought to meet the axis of X at some definite distance to the right and left of the origin and coincide with the axis from there on, for in all actual observations there is a limit beyond which no errors occur. But as the exact point of meeting could not be determined for any given case, and as it would not be possible to obtain the equation of such a curve, we make it asymptotic to the axis of. X, taking care that the error thus introduced shall in any set of observations be so small as to be negligible. The Total Least Squares Problem written by Sabine Van Huffel and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-01-01 with Mathematics categories.

This is the first book devoted entirely to total least squares. The authors give a unified presentation of the TLS problem. A description of its basic principles are given, the various algebraic, statistical and sensitivity properties of the problem are discussed, and generalizations are presented. Applications are surveyed to facilitate uses in an even wider range of applications. Whenever possible, comparison is made with the well-known least squares methods. A basic knowledge of numerical linear algebra, matrix computations, and some notion of elementary statistics is required of the reader; however, some background material is included to make the book reasonably self-contained.

Basic Principles Of Structural Equation Modeling written by Ralph O. Mueller and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Social Science categories.

During the last two decades, structural equation modeling (SEM) has emerged as a powerful multivariate data analysis tool in social science research settings, especially in the fields of sociology, psychology, and education. Although its roots can be traced back to the first half of this century, when Spearman (1904) developed factor analysis and Wright (1934) introduced path analysis, it was not until the 1970s that the works by Karl Joreskog and his associates (e. g. , Joreskog, 1977; Joreskog and Van Thillo, 1973) began to make general SEM techniques accessible to the social and behavioral science research communities. Today, with the development and increasing avail ability of SEM computer programs, SEM has become a well-established and respected data analysis method, incorporating many of the traditional analysis techniques as special cases. State-of-the-art SEM software packages such as LISREL (Joreskog and Sorbom, 1993a,b) and EQS (Bentler, 1993; Bentler and Wu, 1993) handle a variety of ordinary least squares regression designs as well as complex structural equation models involving variables with arbitrary distributions. Unfortunately, many students and researchers hesitate to use SEM methods, perhaps due to the somewhat complex underlying statistical repre sentation and theory. In my opinion, social science students and researchers can benefit greatly from acquiring knowledge and skills in SEM since the methods-applied appropriately-can provide a bridge between the theo retical and empirical aspects of behavioral research.

Excerpt from A Treatise on the Method of Least Squares, or the Application of the Theory of Probabilities in the Combination of Observations As the Method of Least Squares is applicable in almost all the physical sciences where numerical results are to be de duced from observations, and is here treated from fundae mental and general principles, it is thought that this separate publication of the Appendix will supply the want that has for a long time been felt of a suitable text-book on this sub jcet for the use of students of practical science generally, and more especially of classes in our scientific schools.
