Excerpt from General Register of the Officers and Alumni, 1873-1904 This is the first General Register to be published by the University. It is intended to give a concise history of the person nel of the University, as to officers, faculty, and graduates, from the date of organization to July 1, 1904. The information has been obtained from many sources, but principally from the persons named in the volume, the records of the Secretary of the Board of Regents, the University catalogues, and the records of the Alumni Association. The officers and members of the Board of Regents have been arranged in order of appointment, or election; the officers of administration, according to the plan of the Annual Catalogue; and the officers of instruction, on the basis of seniority. The data concerning each officer is limited to his career in the Uni versity of Oregon. In the list of the Alumni appear the names of the graduates of the old Normal Course, abolished in 1884. By formal act of the Board of Regents in June 1890, the degree of B. S. Was con ferred on all graduates of the Normal Course. The English Course had but one graduate. The degrees of B. L. And B. S. D. Have been conferred only once (1897) in the history of the University. The B. L. Degree was conferred on three graduates of the class of 1897 for the completion of the four-year Literary Course. The B. S. D. Degree was given to six graduates of a short course in Scientific Didactics. The present volume contains the names of all graduates of the University, including the class of 1904. It is intended to give a concise history of the personnel of the University for the first ten years, closing with July 1, 1902. In June 1864, General Ulysses Grant ordered his cavalry commander, Philip Sheridan, to conduct a raid to destroy the Virginia Central Railroad between Charlottesville and Richmond. Sheridan fell short of his objective when he was defeated by General Wade Hampton's cavalry in a two-day battle at Trevilian Station. The first day's fighting saw dismounted Yankees and Rebels engaged at close range in dense forest. By day's end, Hampton had withdrawn to the west. Advancing the next morning, Sheridan found Hampton dug in behind hastily built fortifications and launched seven dismounted assaults, each repulsed with heavy casualties. As darkness fell, the Confederates counterattacked, driving the Union forces from the field. Sheridan began his withdrawal that night, an ordeal for his men, the Union wounded and Confederate prisoners brought off the field and the hundreds of starved and exhausted horses that marked his retreat, killed to prevent their falling into Confederate hands.

Commanding Generals And Chiefs Of Staff 1775 2013 written by William Gardner Bell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with Generals categories.

From the Foreword: This volume provides short biographical sketches of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff who have led the United States Army. Their rise through the levels of leadership to the pinnacle of their profession reveals both striking parallels and equally fascinating contrasts. While their responsibilities have evolved over the years, the essential elements of leadership remain unchanged. The format of this volume combines biographical information along with the officially designated portraits of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff. It also includes brief accounts of the artists selected to paint the official portraits. As an aspect of the Army art program, these portraits add an interesting and revealing dimension to the biographer's words. This volume not only celebrates the legacy of dedication and patriotism left by these leaders, but also enhances our understanding of military leadership at the highest levels. All those interested in the profession of arms should become familiar with those who have led our Army.

Secretaries Of War And Secretaries Of The Army written by William Gardner Bell and has been published by U.S. Government Printing Office this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Cabinet officers categories.

Foreword: The Center Of Military History first published Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army: Portraits & biographical sketches in 1981 during the bicentennial of the American Revolution and the US Constitution. The book reflected two major themes of the Army's commemoration: the role of the soldier-statesmen of the revolution in the creation of our government and the constitutional principle of civilian control of the military. This updated printing continues to recognize those twin legacies. The first Secretaries of War were prominent members of the soldier-statesmen generation, and they and their successors have embodied the Founding Fathers' intent to ensure civilian leadership in military affairs. Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army is relevant to students and scholars in such diverse fields as military history, political science, American studies, and art and portraiture. We trust that this new edition will continue to be useful as background for the nomination of Army secretaries, as a handbook for the congressional armed services committees, and as a reference book throughout the Army. It has been a valuable source of information for libraries, and we hope that its distinctive perspective on the history of the Army will interest a new generation of the American public as well.
