High harmonic generation featuring ultra-short pulses, short wavelengths and highly coherent radiation in a table-top setup has become one of the most versatile and affordable tools for studies of atomic and molecular dynamics as well as for nano-scale coherent diffractive imaging. In this book, we show the background and technical aspects of the generation and enhancement of high order harmonic radiations down to the water window region (2.3 - 4.4 nm). The source is specifically tailored and developed for imaging applications. By controlling and stabilizing the phase-matching condition in a gas cell, an extreme ultra-violet source which satisfies these requirements has been generated. Using a harmonic source with wavelengths around 30 nm, a resolution of 45 nm for a micrometer-size transmission sample has been obtained and biological-like absorption samples are also successfully reconstructed. A phase retrieval algorithm with a phase-curvature correction is developed to take advantage of the higher photon flux when placing the sample near the focus point.

The goal of this research program is the development of coherent X-ray sources is the kilovolt range. An initial application of short wavelength radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet region for photoemission studies of GaHz surfaces has been performed demonstrating the feasibility of this class of experiments. A basic and long-standing problem in the field of coherent sources is that associated with the generation of coherent energy in the extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions. During the last three years, picosecond rare gas halogen (RGH) excimert laser technology, on account of the very favorable scaling relationships governing the spectral brightness of these sources, has emerged as a key factor in new techniques useful for generation of coherent radiation below 100 nm. The operation of RGH systems will be extended down into the femtosecond region, a development that will enable sources with peak powers P in the 1TW

Extreme ultraviolet radiation, also referred to as soft X-rays or XUV, offers very special optical properties. The X-UV refractive index of matter is such that normal reflection cannot take place on polished surfaces whereas beam transmission through one micrometer of almost all materials reduces to zero. Therefore, it has long been a difficult task to imagine and to implement devices designed for complex optics experiments in this wavelength range. Thanks to new sources of coherent radiation - XUV-lasers and High Order Harmonics - the use of XUV radiation, for interferometry, holography, diffractive optics, non-linear radiation-matter interaction, time-resolved study of fast and ultrafast phenomena and many other applications, including medical sciences, is ubiquitous.

High harmonic generation (HHG) is a fascinating strong-field physics phenomenon that occurs when a laser pulse with a moderate intensity interacts with atoms and partially ionizes the atoms. A series of harmonics are generated at similar efficiencies and extend to a few tenth, even thousandth, order harmonics at the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray range. Such an unprecedented broadband and coherent spectrum thus has many novel applications, one of which is to build tabletop coherent EUV and soft X-ray sources. The development of EUV and soft X-ray lasers is very challenging because of the strong absorption of these wavelengths in almost all materials and the lack of appropriate reflection optics. So far, bright coherent EUV and soft X-ray sources are only available at several large-scale facilities, like free-electron lasers. However, the demands for coherent EUV sources is growing due to the advances in atomic physics, chemistry, and material science. Therefore, lab-scale EUV sources are highly desirable for these novel applications and research opportunities, and HHG emerges as a promising technology toward this goal. This thesis will present my PhD work on HHG. It includes the numerical models developed to simulate HHG either on single-atom scale or for a macroscopic medium, the modification to the current theoretical model, the analysis of the influence of plasma defocusing on HHG, the study of the wavelength scaling of HHG efficiency and cutoff with visible and near-infrared (IR) lasers, and the generation of multi-mJ ultrashort mid-IR (2.6 mJ, 39 fs, and 2 tm central wavelength) pulses at kHz repetition rate in the aim of extending the cutoff of HHG. With the kHz mid-IR pulses, an EUV source providing up to 108 photons/sec at 160 eV has been demonstrated, and photons in the water window range have also been detected. At the end, a chapter will summarize these research works and propose some possible future directions.

High spectral brightness rare gas halogen (RGH) sources can be used to generate coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation by either harmonic generation mechanisms or direct multiquantum excitation of appropriate gain media. In order to demonstrate the basic characteristics of these two approaches, recent comparative measurements have been made. With the use of a 4 GW 193 nm (ArF*) system operating at a pulse duration of 10 ps, harmonic generation has been studied in several atomic and molecular media and used to generate 20 kW at 64.3 nm and 200 W at 38.6 nm. In addition, stimulated emission in molecular hydrogen on both the Lyman and Werner bands excited by two quantum absorption at 193 nm, has resulted in the generation of radiation as short as 117.6 nm at an efficiency of conversion approaching one percent. It has been concluded that the latter method is superior for the generation of short wavelength radiation. Extension of these results to both shorter wavelengths and higher power levels requires the ultraviolet. Recent studies of collision-free multiply-charged ion production with irradiation at 193 nm point to an anomalously strong coupling to high Z materials with processes involving as many as 99 quanta being observed. These multiquantum processes in the 40 - 80 eV rane in certain atomic systems can be generated with existing laser instrumentation. (Author).
