High harmonic generation featuring ultra-short pulses, short wavelengths and highly coherent radiation in a table-top setup has become one of the most versatile and affordable tools for studies of atomic and molecular dynamics as well as for nano-scale coherent diffractive imaging. In this book, we show the background and technical aspects of the generation and enhancement of high order harmonic radiations down to the water window region (2.3 - 4.4 nm). The source is specifically tailored and developed for imaging applications. By controlling and stabilizing the phase-matching condition in a gas cell, an extreme ultra-violet source which satisfies these requirements has been generated. Using a harmonic source with wavelengths around 30 nm, a resolution of 45 nm for a micrometer-size transmission sample has been obtained and biological-like absorption samples are also successfully reconstructed. A phase retrieval algorithm with a phase-curvature correction is developed to take advantage of the higher photon flux when placing the sample near the focus point.

Extreme ultraviolet radiation, also referred to as soft X-rays or XUV, offers very special optical properties. The X-UV refractive index of matter is such that normal reflection cannot take place on polished surfaces whereas beam transmission through one micrometer of almost all materials reduces to zero. Therefore, it has long been a difficult task to imagine and to implement devices designed for complex optics experiments in this wavelength range. Thanks to new sources of coherent radiation - XUV-lasers and High Order Harmonics - the use of XUV radiation, for interferometry, holography, diffractive optics, non-linear radiation-matter interaction, time-resolved study of fast and ultrafast phenomena and many other applications, including medical sciences, is ubiquitous.

The light source that has revolutionized attosecond science over the last decades is based on the process of high-harmonic generation (HHG), which is a unique method to generate a broadband coherent spectrum extending into the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) range. The temporal and spatial resolution of HHG enables investigation of strong-field light-matter interaction in the ultrafast and ultrasmall dimensions, and finds applications in attosecond science, lensless imaging, and industrial metrology. Unfortunately, the intrinsic low conversion efficiency of HHG and the limited methods to control the generated XUV wavefront, slow down present research and future development of applications that are based on HHG. Control over the HHG process is essential to improve the conversion efficiency and XUV wavefront characteristics, in order to facilitate next-generation attosecond science and metrology. This thesis presents experimental techniques and results that demonstrate control over both gas-based and solid-based HHG in the extreme-ultraviolet regime. Additionally, the underlying mechanism and working principles are explained through theoretical models and simulations. In Chapter 4, we demonstrate divergence and yield optimization in polarization controlled two-color gas-based HHG. Imaging, spectroscopy, and metrology applications using HHG sources require high XUV brightness, related to the conversion efficiency and the focusability of the generated XUV pulses. We systematically investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, the effect of the relative polarization between the fundamental and its second harmonic in two-color HHG, and compare the results to a one-color configuration. In a perpendicular two-color field, the relative phase between the two colors can be used to manipulate the long or the short trajectories, allowing control over the divergence of the harmonics.

This thesis discusses the power scaling of ultrashort pulses in enhancement cavities, utilized in particular for frequency conversion processes, such as Thomson scattering and high-harmonic generation. Using custom optics for ultrashort-pulse enhancement cavities, it demonstrates for the first time that at the envisaged power levels, the mitigation of thermal effects becomes indispensable even in cavities comprising solely reflective optics. It also studies cavities with large beams, albeit with low misalignment sensitivity, as a way to circumvent intensity-induced mirror damage. Average powers of several hundred kilowatts are demonstrated, which benefit hard x-ray sources based on Thomson scattering. Furthermore, pulses as short as 30 fs were obtained at more than 10 kW of average power and employed for high-harmonic generation with photon energies exceeding 100 eV at 250 MHz repetition rate, paving the way for frequency comb spectroscopy in this spectral region.
