La flessibilità, che identifica molti dei processi che hanno trasformato il mondo del lavoro, si riflette sulle nuove generazioni nelle declinazioni atipiche delle forme contrattuali, nella varietà e variabilità delle competenze, dei profili professionali e delle esperienze curriculari, così come nell’adattabilità dei progetti di vita entro orizzonti corti, se non limitati al presente, o continuamente ridefiniti. Attraverso un’indagine condotta sui giovani campani, la ricerca analizza sia la condizione lavorativa effettiva, anche rispetto alla coerenza con le scelte di percorso e con il lavoro prefigurato dall’investimento formativo, sia le rappresentazioni e i significati che i giovani attribuiscono al lavoro (interesse economico, impegno temporale, realizzazione personale e sociale, valore relazionale, etc.) anche in rapporto agli altri spazi di vita. Nella parte finale il volume rintraccia i segmenti emergenti dalla realtà giovanile osservata attraverso un’analisi multidimensionale che insieme alla sfera lavorativa tiene conto delle tappe raggiunte nel passaggio alla maturità, della dimensione partecipativa nelle reti sociali e dei diversi orientamenti alla progettualità di vita.

The Welfare State and Life Transitions uses the lens of key life stages to highlight changes in these transitions and in available resources for citizen support within nine European welfare states. This timely book reveals that new life courses are found to require more, and not less welfare support, but only Sweden has developed an active life course approach and only three more could be considered supportive, in at least some life stages. For the remainder, policies were at best limited or, in Italy.s case, passive. The contributors reveal that the neglect of changing needs is leading to greater reliance on the family and the labour market, just as these support structures are becoming more unpredictable and moreunequal. This book analyses protests against the Great Recession in the European periphery. While social movements have long been considered as children of affluent times - or at least of times of opening opportunities - these protests defy such expectations, developing instead in moments of diminishing opportunities in both the economic and the political realms. Can social movement studies still be useful to understanding these movements of troubled times? The authors offer a positive answer to this question, although specify the need to bridge contentious politics with other fields, including political economy. They highlight differences in the social movements’ strength and breadth and attempt to understand them in terms of three sets of dimensions: a) the specific characteristics of the socio-economic crisis and its consequences in terms of mobilization potential; b) the political reactions to it, in what we can define as political opportunities and threats; and c) the social movement cultures and structures that characterize each country. The book discusses these topics through a contextualized analysis of anti-austerity protest in the European periphery.

Austerity has become the new principle for public policy in Europe and the US as the financial crisis of 2008 has been converted into a public debt crisis. However, current austerity measures risk losing past progress towards gender equality by undermining important employment and social welfare protections and putting gender equality policy onto the back burner. This volume constitutes the first attempt to identify how the economic crisis and the subsequent austerity policies are affecting women in Europe and the US, tracing the consequences for gender equality in employment and welfare systems in nine case studies from countries facing the most severe adjustment problems. The contributions adopt a common framework to analyse women in recession, which takes into account changes in women’s position and current austerity conditions. The findings demonstrate that in the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis, employment gaps between women and men declined — but due only to a deterioration in men’s employment position rather than any improvements for women. Tables are set to be turned by the austerity policies which are already having a more negative impact on demand for female labour and on access to services which support working mothers. Women are nevertheless reinforcing their commitment to paid work, even at this time of increasing demands on their unpaid domestic labour. Future prospects are bleak. Current policy is reinforcing the same failed mechanisms that caused the crisis in the first place and is stalling or even reversing the long term growth in social investment in support for care. This book makes the case for gender equality to be placed at the centre of any progressive plan for a route out of the crisis.

Disoccupazione e inoccupazione giovanile sono un problema drammatico di molti paesi e, tra i più colpiti, il nostro. Le conseguenze sul piano socio-economico si toccano con mano, perché quella che stiamo vivendo è una crisi di sistema: famiglie in diffcoltà, crollo demografco, assenza di progettualità, disintegrazione sociale. Oltre a quella strettamente economica, altrettanto grave, anche se non ha la risonanza che merita, è la ricaduta della crisi lavorativa sulle persone, sulla loro identità ed esistenza presente e futura. Che cosa avviene nella vita di quanti si trovano improvvisamente emarginati, esclusi, “disaffgliati”, stanchi di bussare a porte sbarrate per lungo tempo? Sono questioni che attendono certamente risposte di ambito economico (analizzate nella prima parte del volume), ma che oggi richiedono una prospettiva di più ampio respiro, oggetto della seconda parte del volume. La tesi proposta è questa: accanto all’economia serve il coinvolgimento delle scienze umane e sociali, in primis la pedagogia: di qui la scelta di un approccio interdisciplinare. A fronte di una corrente di pensiero incline al pessimismo, in queste pagine si offre una chiave di lettura moderatamente ottimistica, ad una condizione però: che la pedagogia si faccia seriamente carico di un ripensamento radicale dell’idea di lavoro e della formazione e privilegi l’importanza dell’educazione iniziale, all’interno della famiglia e della scuola.
