The Days of Creation examines the history of Christian interpretation of the seven-day framework of Genesis 1:1–2:3 in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament from the post-apostolic era to the debates surrounding Essays and Reviews (1860). Included in the survey are patristic, medieval, Renaissance/Reformation, eighteenth-century Enlightenment and finally early to mid-nineteenth-century interpretations of the days of creation. The author shows that readings of Genesis 1:1–2:3 in the modern era have much deeper roots than is sometimes realized. The "day-age' scheme has roots in Augustine's figurative creation days, the world-week historical scheme, Renaissance Platonism and Newtonian science, while the "literal' alternative of the gap theory combines ancient literal interpretation with chaos concepts derived from Greco-Roman myths and interpreted through a geological lens. Early treatments of this text are poorly understood because of their very different philosophical and theological contexts. Hasty appropriation of ancient precedents as support for modern interpretations often overlooks or oversimplifies this difference. Changing ideas and exploration in the early Modern era undermined the dominance of this text, so that by the time of Goodwin's essay in Essays and Reviews, Genesis 1:1–2:3 was already well on the way to its present intellectual marginalization. This study enables an insight into the mighty career of a biblical text of seminal importance, and fills a significant niche in reception-historical research.

Genesis: A Theological Commentary for Preachers engages hermeneutics for preaching, employing theological exegesis that enables the preacher to utilize all the narrative units of the book to craft effective sermons. This commentary unpacks the crucial link between Scripture and application: the theology of each preaching text, i.e., what the author is doing with what he is saying. Genesis is thus divided into thirty-five narrative units and the theological focus of each is delineated. The overall theological trajectory/theme of the book--divine blessing: creating for blessing (Gen 1-11), moving towards blessing (Gen 12-24), experiencing the blessing (Gen 25-36), and being a blessing (Gen 37-50)--is thus progressively developed. The specificity of these theological ideas for their respective texts makes possible a sequential homiletical movement through each pericope of the book, enabling the expositor to discover valid application for sermons. While the primary goal of the commentary is to take the preacher from text to theology, it also provides two sermon outlines for each of the thirty-five units of Genesis. The unique approach of this work results in a theology-for-preaching commentary that promises to be useful for anyone teaching through Genesis with an emphasis on application.

When a layman opens a theological book he often finds that it is like half-cooked rice, since mostbooks of this nature are written from a scholarly standpoint, emphasizing the intellectual approachrather than giving a spiritual application for the reader's edification. The latter is what most laymendesire and need.For a long time I have desired to make available a book on Genesis that could be understoodby laymen and still be used as a reference book for theological students. In the winter of 1962 I beganto prepare a biblical theology of Genesis. But due to the pressing schedule in the years following,teaching at Talbot Theological Seminary, serving on the translation committee of the New AmericanStandard Bible, plus a full-time job pastoring a church, little energy was left for the book. The desireto publish the book came to mind again when duties on the committee and at the seminary werecompleted. Original manuscripts were revised, suggestions from friends were added, and the presentvolume became a reality.This book contains two parts. Part one serves as an introduction. Without it the latter partmay not be appreciated in full. Part two contains the three periods of Genesis, the Adamic Period,the Noachian Period, and the Patriarchal Period. In each of these periods the revelation of God andthe revelation of man are respectively and progressively discussed. I have assumed that the readerhas some basic knowledge of Genesis. If not, it is recommended that each Scripture passage be readbefore considering the corresponding discussion in this book.I wish to express gratitude to my late wife, Gracie, and to Joanne Kimble for their invaluableliterary and grammatical help, for designing the format and book cover, and for doing the wordprocessing.
