Introduction To Forest Genetics written by Jonathan Wright and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Introduction to Forest Genetics examines some of the basic genetic concepts typically used in forestry and tree improvement studies, including Mendelian and population genetics. It also describes techniques that are generally useful in tree improvement work, including individual tree selection and breeding, provenance testing, species and racial hybridization, and introduction of exotics. Organized into 19 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of forest genetics and problems associated with forest genetics. It then discusses concepts from basic genetics, including chromosome structure and function; DNA and RNA; nongenetic inheritance; and genotype versus phenotype. Other chapters focus on inbreeding: complete elimination of homozygous recessive trees; mutation and migration; and controlled pollination and vegetative propagation. The book also covers the establishment and measurement of test plantations; general principles and methods of selective breeding; choice of breeding method and type of seed orchard; heritability and genetic gain; geographic variation in Scotch pine and American trees; species and racial hybridization; chromosome studies; and polyploidy and haploidy breeding. This book is a valuable resource for foresters, professional tree breeders, and those with or without previous training in genetics or forestry.

S2Genetic and environmental components of variance for 2-year heights of offspring from inter- and intra-provenance matings in Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were studied to determine which provenances and selection methods should be used in a program to improve ornamental and Christmas trees. The study represents 11 experiments (parental groups), consisting of families from 7 diallel matings minus selfs in 5 different provenances, 3 factorial matings between provenances, and 1 from open pollination. The seedlings for the 11 experiments were grown in pots and in a nursery for 2 years. Heritability estimates of 2-year height from inter- and intra-provenance matings tended to be larger on a family basis than on an individual basis, with the larger estimates being from nursery evaluations. In general, additive genetic variance was larger than dominance variance, although dominance variance increased in provenance hybrids. Nursery evaluation was preferred to pot evaluation of 2-year height because heritability estimates were larger and error variances were smaller for the experiments evaluated. Individual selection in the nursery within the German provenance seems to be the best method for improvement of 2-year height of the provenances evaluated in this study, although the rate of improvement in the Spanish provenance may be greater. Simple recurrent selection would be a good method for improvement of traits important to the Christmas tree producing industry. S3.

Since the Scots pine species is most important in Eurasia, it was considered necessary to involve authors from as many countries as was possible including Eastern Europe and U.S.S.R. During the 18th IUFRO World Congress in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, in September 1986, details were worked out for the contents of this book. This book is a truly international effort, prepared in the traditional IUFRO spirit of selfless co-operation. In all, 24 authors from 9 countries are involved. Each chapter was reviewed by two editors from two different countries.

Genetics Genomics And Breeding Of Conifers written by Christophe Plomion and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-10 with Science categories.

With contributions by internationally reputed researchers in the field, this book presents the implications of the genomic revolution for conifers—promoting a better understanding of the evolution of these organisms as well as new knowledge about the molecular basis of quantitative trait variation. Both of these discoveries play important roles in their domestication. Topics include cytogenetics, patterns of nucleotide diversity, genetic mapping, integration of molecular markers in breeding, transcriptomics, advances in proteomics and metabolomics in gymnosperms, and economic importance.
