For example, the lichens are symbiotic consortia and a prominent example of a particularly successful ‘evolution by cooperation’. We collectively call this enormous phylogenetic wealth of photoautotrophic organisms the ‘new cryptogams’, abandoning the traditional definition of cryptogams.
