Este Tomo culmina el listado de las trescientas seis biografías que constituyen el total de este libro. Finaliza así el homenaje a aquellos que a través de sus interpretaciones o sus producciones musicales engrandecieron al tango, y a través de él contribuyeron a afianzar la cultura rioplatense en el Mundo. Están ahora los directores, arregladores, ejecutantes, cantores, autores y compositores que por capricho del abecedario quedaron en el tercio final del listado que conforman el trabajo que el autor iniciara a fines del año 2004. Completados los tres tomos, la expectativa es que la obra pueda cubrir del modo más amplio posible la historia de esta música, sistematizándola sobre la base de quienes dedicaron a ella sus mayores afanes. Como se expresó en la contratapa de los dos tomos anteriores, la nómina de artistas que encararon esta tarea es tan amplia que no es posible incluir en este diccionario biográfico a todos ellos. No obstante, se reitera la expectativa de que al menos implícitamente el reconocimiento alcance a todos, y en especial a aquellos menos recordados por el gran público pese a sus afanes y desvelos por contribuir a la gran cruzada de la difusión de nuestra música popular. Nuevamente estas reseñas permiten al lector transitar el siglo XX y la primera década del actual a través de la vida de los últimos ciento tres personajes recreadas en este tomo. Culmina así este homenaje a la "Gente de Tango", la mayoría de los cuales ya no está entre nosotros, pero perduran en el recuerdo y el afecto de quienes tienen "su corazón envuelto en tangos" como rezan los versos que encabezan la presentación con la que el autor inicia el Tomo 1.

Los años ochenta del siglo XIX constituyeron una década clave en muchos aspectos para comprender la Argentina que transcurrida hasta nuestros días. Había concluido ya el ciclo bélico que contextualizó hasta entonces a ese siglo y comenzaban las profundas transformaciones promovidas por la brillante generación surgida por esos años, la que para siempre pasó a ser "La generación del 80". Una de las manifestaciones más visibles y perdurables del encuentro de diversas culturas que se produce en una Buenos Aires que inicia en ese marco una etapa de crecimiento y modernización sorprendentes, es precisamente el advenimiento de la música que a partir de entonces habría de identificarla. Surgieron nombres imborrables de una historia que ahí comenzaba y que continúa en nuestros días. El tango fue generador de artistas del pueblo que en algunos casos forman parte del patrimonio cultural del país, como asimismo de otros que aportaron a esa identidad y sin embargo hoy son nombres a los que poco se recuerda. Este libro pretende ser un homenaje a unos y otros, recordando sus trayectorias y sus aportes al género que abrazaron con pasión. Por supuesto no están todos, esto hubiese sido imposible. Las biografías que forman parte de este trabajo han requerido separarlas en tres tomos, ordenados alfabéticamente por el apellido –real o artístico- de la persona a la que refiere la respectiva reseña. Éste es el primero de tres tomos, un tercio del total de las biografías que han sido elaboradas por el autor. Los otros dos tomos oportunamente serán puestos a disposición de todos los que se interesen por conocer una parte de la historia del género musical que nos identifica en el mundo, como expresa la tapa de este libro.

Este Tomo 2 continúa el desarrollo de las biografías de aquellos que a través de sus interpretaciones o sus producciones musicales engrandecieron el género musical que identifica en el Mundo a Buenos Aires en particular y a toda la Argentina en general. Siguen desfilando así en estricto orden alfabético directores, arregladores, ejecutantes, cantores, autores y compositores que supieron abrazar con pasión al tango y lo llevaron por todos los confines. La pretensión de la obra, una vez completados sus tres tomos, es cubrir del modo más amplio posible la historia de esta música, sistematizándola sobre la base de quienes dedicaron a ella sus mayores afanes. Como se expresó en la contratapa del tomo anterior, la nómina de artistas que encararon esta tarea es tan amplia que nunca sería posible incluir en este diccionario biográfico a todos ellos. De todos modos, la idea del autor es que el reconocimiento alcance al menos implícitamente a todos, y en especial a aquellos ignotos para el gran público porque sólo pudieron aportar esfuerzos muy humildes. Vuelve a transitarse entonces a partir de estas reseñas todo el siglo XX y la primera década del actual. Surgen así, como ya ocurriera en el tomo anterior dado el ordenamiento adoptado, ciento dos nuevos personajes cuyas vidas recrean en este tomo las épocas de la guardia vieja, la era decariana, la época de oro de los años cuarenta y cincuenta, las orquestas y los cantores de las décadas del sesenta y el setenta, y las dos últimas décadas del siglo pasado y la primera del actual, con su renovación musical que afortunadamente en la mayoría de los casos mantuvo la esencia y la mística que sustenta al tango. Queda solo ahora pendiente el Tomo III que cerrará las trescientas seis biografías objeto de este homenaje a la "Gente de Tango", cuya inmensa mayoría ya no está entre nosotros, pero perdura en el recuerdo y el afecto de quienes tienen "su corazón envuelto en tangos".

Tracing Tangueros offers an inside view of Argentine tango music in the context of the growth and development of the art form's instrumental and stylistic innovations. Rather than perpetuating the glamorous worldwide conceptions that often only reflect the tango that left Argentina nearly 100 years ago, authors Kacey Link and Kristin Wendland trace tango's historical and stylistic musical trajectory in Argentina, beginning with the guardia nueva's crystallization of the genre in the 1920s, moving through tango's Golden Age (1932-1955), and culminating with the "Music of Buenos Aires" today. Through the transmission, discussion, examination, and analysis of primary sources currently unavailable outside of Argentina, including scores, manuals of style, archival audio/video recordings, and live video footage of performances and demonstrations, Link and Wendland frame and define Argentine tango music as a distinct expression possessing its own musical legacy and characteristic musical elements. Beginning by establishing a broad framework of the tango art form, the book proceeds to move through twelve in-depth profiles of representative tangueros (tango musicians) within the genre's historical and stylistic trajectory. This volume examines the political, cultural, and social role of the population with African background in the shaping of national identity in various Latin American countries. Slavery survived well into the nineteenth century in countries such as Brazil and Cuba; first its existence and then the dismantling of the institution strongly affected the definition of citizenship in the emerging nation-states. However, not all blacks were slaves, and a significant number of slaves gained their freedom during periods of war and other central events in the process of state formation. In addition to their direct participation in struggles of national significance, blacks also wrote on social, political, and cultural issues. What is tango? Dance, music, and lyrics of course, but also a philosophy, a strategy, a commodity, even a disease. This book explores the politics of tango, tracing tango's travels from the brothels of Buenos Aires to the cabarets of Paris and the shako dansu clubs of Tokyo. The author is an Argentinean political theorist and a dance professor at the University of California at Riverside. She uses her ?tango tongue? to tell interwoven tales of sexuality, gender, race, class, and national identity. Along the way she unravels relations between machismo and colonialism, postmodernism and patriarchy, exoticism and commodification. In the end she arrives at a discourse on decolonization as intellectual ?unlearning.?Marta Savigliano's voice is highly personal and political. Her account is at once about the exoticization of tango and about her own fate as a Third World woman intellectual.
