This book reviews Cabral’s intellectual contribution to current debates on race, identity, nation building, democracy, leadership and ethics. The key leader of the national liberation movements of former Portuguese African colonies is considered to be one of their foremost intellectuals the continent has produced. This rare combination of freedom fighter, operational campaigner and astute political scientist justifies the academic interest in his contribution. Africa's Contemporary Challenges reviews the impact of Amilcar Cabral’s thinking, and its relationship with contemporary debates about race, identity, nation building, democracy, leadership or ethics. The complexity of Cabral’s vision and hopes for Africa continues to incite curiosity and interest. Cabral's tragic assassination in 1973 has removed the possibility of analysing his impact on post-independent Lusophone Africa, but his thoughts continue to be the most important reference. This book was published as a special issue of African Identities.

Slaves Peasants And Rebels written by Stuart B. Schwartz and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with History categories.

Once preoccupied with Brazilian slavery as an economic system, historians shifted their attention to examine the nature of life and community among enslaved people. Stuart B. Schwartz looks at this change while explaining why historians must continue to place their ethnographic approach in the context of enslavement as an oppressive social and economic system. Schwartz demonstrates the complexity of the system by reconsidering work, resistance, kinship, and relations between enslaved persons and peasants. As he shows, enslaved people played a role in shaping not only their lives but Brazil's institutionalized system of slavery by using their own actions and attitudes to place limits on slaveholders. A bold analysis of changing ideas in the field, Slaves, Peasants, and Rebels provides insights on how the shifting power relationship between enslaved people and slaveholders reshaped the contours of Brazilian society.

Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the nineteenth century had the largest population of urban slaves in the Americas—primary contributors to the atmosphere and vitality of the city. Although most urban historians have ignored these inhabitants of Rio, Mary Karasch's generously illustrated study provides a comprehensive description and analysis of the city's rich Afro-Cariocan culture, including its folklore, its songs, and accounts of its oral history. Professor Karasch's investigation of the origins of Rio's slaves demonstrates the importance of the "Central Africaness" of the slave population to an understanding of its culture. Challenging the thesis of the comparative mildness of the Brazilian slave system, other chapters discuss the marketing of Africans in the Valongo, the principal slave market, and the causes of early slave mortality, including the single greatest killer, tuberculosis. Also examined in detail are adaptation and resistance to slavery, occupations and roles of slaves in an urban economy, and art, religion, and associational life. Mary C. Karasch is Associate Professor of History at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Originally published in 1987. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Slave Rebellion In Brazil written by João José Reis and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-09 with History categories.

On the night of January 24, 1835, hundreds of African Muslim slaves poured into the streets of Salvador, capital of the Brazilian province of Bahia, to confront soldiers and armed civilians. Nearly 70 slaves were killed. More than 500 were sentenced to death, prison, whipping or deportation. Although the rebel slaves failed to win their freedom, the repercussions of their actions were felt throughout the nation, making this the most important urban slave rebellion in the Americas, and the only one in which Islam played a major role. In this history of the 1835 uprising, Joao Jose Reis draws on hundreds of police and trial records in which Africans, despite obvious intimidation, spoke out about their cultural, social, economic, religious and domestic lives in Salvador. Now available in this revised and expanded English edition, "Slave Rebellion in Brazil" is a portrait of the conditions of urban slavery and an absorbing account of conspiracy, uprising and punishment. --

"Águas, Flores & Perfumes" analisa algumas medidas governamentais e jurídicas tomadas desde o final do século XIX até as primeiras décadas do século XX.
