Nine years have elapsed since I wrote the first English edition of this book, and progress in hair science has made a second edition necessary. Since 1978, at least two new m~or scientific cosmetic journals have appeared, and four International Hair Science Symposia and one International Symposium on Forensic Hair Comparisons have been held. Thus, continuing studies in hair science have been numerous in the past nine years, so much so that a large proportion of the text had to be completely rewritten. In addition, a number of omissions that were kindly pointed out by reviewers have been included in this edition, as well as corrections sent to me by readers. I sincerely hope that this new edition fulfills the original purposes: to provide a reasonably up to date and complete account of the chemical and physical properties and behavior of human hair, and to serve as a convenient starting point for hair research-and, as indicated in the first edition, not to be the final word.

Did you know that Louis XIV, the Sun King, had 48 wigmakers to help him hide his premature baldness? Hair has always been a part of what makes a person look both attractive and powerful, but it's also frequently been the subject of regulation and public opinion. From afros to wigs, modest bonnets to beehives, side burns to shaved looks, and so much more, the history of hair is decidedly weird and complicated. Samson and Delilah, the Beatles, Farrah Fawcett, Princess Diana, Clara Bow, they're all brought into sharp focus through this fascinating book that readers are sure to love.

Human Hair Diversity written by John Gray and has been published by Wiley-Blackwell this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-05-03 with Medical categories.

The book discusses the different basic hair types and how these have changed over thousands of years due to the movement and gradual blending of populations and more recently to the demands of fashion for straightening, colouring, curling or otherwise altering the hair. It begins with a description of the structure of different types of hair, and then describes how the spread of humans over the earth has led to so much hair diversity . The effect that differences in porosity, elasticity and texture have on different hair types is explained. Advice is given on how to treat hair to maintain its strength and condition and to avoid unnecessary hair loss, breakage or even scalp burn. The final chapters consider the various chemicals used in hair treatments, with their actions and interactions, and explains how to minimise the damage that careless treatment can inflict. Our hair is a unique asset, which we can use to represent an 'image,' express rebellion, or even attract a mate.
