Im Sport spricht man ja häufig vom undankbaren vierten Platz. Und dieses Bild lässt sich durchaus auch auf andere Bereiche übertragen. Zum Beispiel auf die Rangliste der bevölkerungsreichsten Länder der Erde. Die ersten drei Plätze kann wohl jeder ohne allzu viel Nachdenken nennen. Auf dem Siegertreppchen steht ja auch ein altbekanntes Trio: China, Indien und die USA. Doch wer folgt dann? Würden Sie in einer Quizshow diese Frage ohne Joker beantworten wollen? Vermutlich nicht. Dabei ist das viertplatzierte Land – Indonesien – nicht nur Heimat von rund 270 Millionen Menschen, es ist auch eine der am schnellsten wachsenden Ökonomien der Welt. Seine Hauptstadt Jakarta liegt zudem in einer der größten Metropolregionen überhaupt. Und doch ist Indonesien und mit ihm ganz Südostasien immer noch so etwas wie ein blinder Fleck – zumindest in unserem eurozentrischen Blick. Daran haben auch die Ereignisse der Kolonialherrschaft und des Kalten Krieges nicht grundlegend etwas geändert. Für viele Europäer steht diese Weltgegend noch immer im Schatten größerer und einflussreicherer Staaten, wie eben Indien oder China. In dieser Ausgabe wollen wir uns endlich diesem faszinierenden Zwischenreich widmen. Besonders empfehlen möchten wir Ihnen die Geschichte unseres Kollegen Johannes Strempel. Er hat die thailändische Hauptstadt Bangkok in einem entscheidenden Moment ihrer Geschichte porträtiert (Seite 100). Der Text erklärt auch, warum ausgerechnet Thailand, das damals noch Siam hieß, sich im 19. Jahrhundert der Kolonialisierung durch die Europäer entziehen konnte. Und wir schlagen einen Bogen ins Heute: Mit der malaysischen Historikerin Sandra Khor Manickam haben wir unter anderem über den Militärputsch in Myanmar gesprochen. Die Ereignisse stimmen sie paradoxerweise hoffnungsvoll. Denn die Härte der Generäle hat dazu geführt, dass sich in ganz Südostasien gleichgesinnte Gruppen mit den Demonstrantinnen und Demonstranten solidarisieren. This third volume in a series on Comparative Succession Law concerns the entitlement of family members to override the provisions of a deceased person's will to obtain money or assets (or more money or assets) from the person's estate. Some countries, notably those in the civil law tradition (such as France or Germany), confer a pre-ordained share of the deceased's estate or of its value on certain members of the deceased's family, and especially on the deceased's children and spouse. Other countries, notably those in the common law tradition (such as England, Canada, or Australia), leave the matter to the discretion of the court, the amount awarded depending primarily on financial need. Whichever form it takes, mandatory family provision is both a protection against disinheritance and also, therefore, a restriction on testamentary freedom. The volume focuses on Europe and on countries influenced by the European experience. In addition to detailed treatment of the law in Austria, England and Wales, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Scotland, and Spain, the book also has chapters on Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, the United States, Canada, the countries of Latin America, and the People's Republic of China. Some other countries are covered more briefly, and there is a separate chapter on Islamic law. The book opens with accounts of Roman law and of the law in medieval and early-modern Europe, and it concludes with a comparative assessment of the law as it is today in the countries and legal traditions surveyed in this volume.

Divided into three sections, this book explores the three main pillars of sustainable development, namely economy, environment and society, and their interlinkages at the regional level.
