Il progresso dell’analisi spaziale e il miglioramento delle tecniche della cartografia digitale hanno permesso di avviare in modo concreto l’applicazione di metodi statistici allo studio della geografia umana. L’integrazione interdisciplinare dei due settori ha dunque consentito l’impiego della ‘carta di distribuzione’ non più solo come mezzo divulgativo, ma anche come strumento d’indagine, capace di fornire nuovi elementi e contenuti alla ricerca sull’uomo. "Geografia dell’incastellamento" illustra il processo di costruzione di un modello geografico relativo all’evoluzione del fenomeno castrense attraverso l’impiego dell’analisi spaziale nello studio della maglia dei castelli medievali della Toscana. In particolare, il volume vuole sottolineare come la descrizione formale delle carte di distribuzione, grazie alla costruzione di un confronto reale, costituisca un grande progresso non solo in termini analitici ma anche nella comunicazione dei risultati. Si tratta di uno studio del fenomeno castrense su base regionale, elaborato all’interno di una cornice formale, nel tentativo di inquadrare ed osservare l’oggetto di studio sotto una luce nuova.

Il volume analizza le trasformazioni dell’habitat in un’area periurbana del contado fiorentino, corrispondente all’attuale territorio comunale di Bagno a Ripoli, con particolare attenzione al processo di trasformazione in residenze signorili dei castelli attestati in questa zona, contraddistinta – già alla metà del XII secolo – dall’influenza politica, economica e sociale esercitata dalla vicina città di Firenze che, fin dal secolo seguente, la scelse come una delle aree privilegiate per gli investimenti del capitale cittadino, provocando una massiccia ristrutturazione dell’intero assetto territoriale. Le dinamiche di tale processo non determinarono la distruzione degli insediamenti precedenti ma il loro riutilizzo, realizzatosi tramite la nascita e lo sviluppo di nuove tipologie di edilizia signorile “alternative” al castello, a vantaggio della classe dirigente cittadina: dimore che, spesso dotate di elementi difensivi o fortificate, sono state a lungo obliterate dalla generica definizione di “casa da signore”. Questa parte di contado, infatti, si andò velocemente caratterizzando per la presenza, dal XIII secolo in poi, di tutta una serie di ‘nuove’ strutture di popolamento, edifici signorili di matrice cittadina (casetorri, “palagi”, fortilitia) che si affiancarono ai castra, e, in breve tempo, si sostituirono ad essi, all’interno di un paesaggio stratificato e complesso, ormai profondamente antropizzato e urbanizzato.

Nel 2014 sono trascorsi i quaranta anni dalla fondazione della rivista Archeologia Medievale. Considerando la velocità con la quale la disciplina si è sviluppata nel nostro Paese, il tempo intercorso si può ritenere sufficientemente lungo per un bilancio. Quando uscì la prima edizione, questo libro era il primo ad avere come soggetto una zona fino ad allora inesplorata e quasi del tutto trascurata dalla storiografia: l’alta Val di Cecina, una “terra incognita”. Fu un lavoro pionieristico che, inaspettatamente, rivelò una zona ricca di resti antichi e medievali. La curatrice dovette quindi confrontarsi con modelli insediativi fino ad allora poco definiti e con un passato seppellito dai profondi mutamenti che vi si erano avvicendati. Inoltre le rapide possibilità di accesso alle fonti archivistiche e bibliografiche tramite Internet – a cui oggi siamo abituati e assuefatti – erano all’epoca ben al di là da venire, come molte delle moderne tecnologie che consentono un migliore studio dell’archeologia globale di un territorio. Dopo trent’anni, molti spunti di ricerca, che avevano trovato per la prima volta espressione in questo volume, sono stati adottati e perseguiti da altri studiosi, che hanno sviluppato alcune delle tematiche proposte nella prima edizione. Qualche esempio fra i tanti: la definizione di sinecismo che sta alla base della genesi dei castelli di Radicondoli e di Belforte nel XII secolo e lo sviluppo urbanistico dei centri di nuova fondazione; i segni dei lapicidi incisi sulle murature della Pieve Vecchia, i primi segnalati e studiati nella Toscana centro-meridionale.

A bold new history of the rise of the medieval Italian commune Amid the disintegration of the Kingdom of Italy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, a new form of collective government—the commune—arose in the cities of northern and central Italy. Sleepwalking into a New World takes a bold new look at how these autonomous city-states came about, and fundamentally alters our understanding of one of the most important political and cultural innovations of the medieval world. Chris Wickham provides richly textured portraits of three cities—Milan, Pisa, and Rome—and sets them against a vibrant backcloth of other towns. He argues that, in all but a few cases, the elites of these cities and towns developed one of the first nonmonarchical forms of government in medieval Europe, unaware that they were creating something altogether new. Wickham makes clear that the Italian city commune was by no means a democracy in the modern sense, but that it was so novel that outsiders did not know what to make of it. He describes how, as the old order unraveled, the communes emerged, governed by consular elites "chosen by the people," and subject to neither emperor nor king. They regularly fought each other, yet they grew organized and confident enough to ally together to defeat Frederick Barbarossa, the German emperor, at the Battle of Legnano in 1176. Sleepwalking into a New World reveals how the development of the autonomous city-state took place, which would in the end make possible the robust civic culture of the Renaissance.
