Questo libro si pone come obiettivo quello di analizzare il multiforme universo sciita da due prospettive diverse ma complementari: la prima prospettiva è quella storico-culturale, finalizzata alla definizione dell’identità religiosa e sociale degli sciiti mentre la seconda è più propriamente sociopolitica. Il libro a tal fine è suddiviso in quattro capitoli. Nel primo si analizza l’origine, lo sviluppo e il nucleo essenziale dell’identità religiosa sciita. Vengono analizzate gli elementi di dottrina religiosa e politica, che determinarono la differenziazione sciita rispetto alla tradizione sunnita e gli eventi storici che diedero origine alle prime comunità sciite. Nel secondo capitolo si evidenzia la complessità, l’eterogeneità e la pluralità dell’Islam sciita attraverso l’analisi delle diverse correnti che lo costituiscono. Vengono esaminati gli aspetti storici, religiosi, politici e socioeconomici delle principali comunità sciite ( imamiti duodecimali, ismailiti, zayditi, drusi, khoja, bohra, carmati, fatimidi, alauiti, alevi, babi e baha’i). Nel terzo capitolo, si analizza il contesto sociopolitico dell’Islam sciita negli stati in cui partigiani di Ali rappresentano una parte preponderante della popolazione e nei paesi in cui la presenza sciita, pur se minoritaria, acquisisce una cruciale importanza per le problematiche in cui è coinvolta. Infine nel quarto ed ultimo capitolo si analizza la complessa realtà iraniana contemporanea. Tale capitolo delinea una sistematica e approfondita analisi della situazione sociopolitica iraniana ed inizia con un’introduzione riguardante il contesto geografico, demografico, linguistico, etnico, religioso, economico dell’Iran contemporaneo. Si analizzano poi le ragioni che hanno fatto dell’Iran, agli occhi del mondo occidentale, il baluardo del fondamentalismo islamico e quali siano gli apporti originali che gli sciiti duodecimani hanno dato alla teoria politica e in che modo tali principi abbiano influenzato (o si siano posti in contrasto con) il pensiero di Khomeini e la costruzione della Repubblica Islamica dell’Iran. Analizzando poi l’architettura istituzionale dell’Iran, cercherò di mettere in evidenza il dualismo proprio di questa Costituzione, che pone in contrasto degli organi a legittimazione religiosa con organi che traggono la propria legittimazione dal voto popolare.
