Excerpt from Geographical Distribution of British Birds The following attempt to make some amends to the Members of the British Ornithologists' Union for the thousand and one blunders contained in a list of British Birds compiled by their committee for which I, as one of the seven delinquents, must bear my share of responsibility and blame, does not pretend to be exempt from the universal liability to error. All it can claim is that some pains have been taken to master the subject and to weigh the balance of evidence in each case as impartially as possible. The attempt has been made to classify British Birds in three different ways. Firstly, as to their distribution within the British Islands; secondly, as to their distribution during the breeding-season outside the British Islands; and thirdly, as to their climatic distribution during the breeding-season. Finally, a list of British Birds has been added containing as much information respecting the geographical distribution of each species as could be compressed into four or five lines. This list is printed on one side of the paper only, so that it can be cut up and used as labels for collections of stuffed birds or eggs. Excerpt from The Migration of British Birds: Including Their Post-Glacial Emigrations as Traced by the Application of a New Law of Disperal Being a Contribution to the Study of Migration, Geographical Distribution, and Insular Faunas I have selected British Birds for this application, chiefly because our knowledge of their distribution, and of the past physical changes in the areas they inhabit, is not only extensive but fairly reliable. We are Often told that there is nothing new to be said about British Birds. I Offer the present volume as an answer to that hackneyed remark, and desire specially to call attention to our lack Of information on many important subjects connected with British ornithology, indicated here and there in the following pages, as a possible field of very fruitful research. I am aware that much in the present volume is Opposed to the general views held by naturalists, and even to those expressed by myself in former works. For such portion of my work, a patient perusal and an impartial judgment are asked. I am quite prepared to meet with some amount of hostility from specialists whose views are not in harmony with this new Law of Dispersal. I have no fear for the results so far as Birds are concerned and I await with profound interest, and yet with every confidence, the results Of its application to other branches of biology, to which only specialists are competent to apply it. On its important bearing on the Distribution of Floras I have already dwelt at some length in my closing chapter. Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 1: With Coloured Illustrations of Their Eggs Interbreeding may or may not mean cross-breeding. Wherever the interbreeding which habitually takes place between the individuals of a species has not ceased, any differences between them can only be subspecific. Subspecies may be defined as groups in which the interbreeding which habitually takes place between individuals in a Species has not yet ceased, but takes place along the whole line of its geographical distribution, though seldom between the two extremes.xii IN troduction. Excerpt from A Handbook of British Birds: Showing the Distribution of the Resident and Migratory Species in the British Islands With an Index to the Records of the Rarer Visitants Following upon the daily exigencies of official work, the preparation of this volume has occupied the leisure hours of many years, and as an attempt to show in one volume the precise status of every so-called British bird, distinguishing the rare and accidental visitors from the residents and annual migrants, it conveys information of a kind which is not to be found in any other work on British birds. Divided into two parts, the first portion deals with British Birds properly so called, being residents, periodical migrants, and annual visitants; the second portion includes the Rare and accidental visitants, and a special feature of the book is that in the case of every rare bird a list of occurrences is given, from the publication of the earliest records (so far as has been ascertained) down to the end of the year 1900. The reader is thereby enabled to estimate at a glance the precise nature of the claim which any given species has to be considered British. Some notion of the labour entailed may be formed when it is stated that 'the number of references in Part I. Amounts to 1500; in Part II. To 2325, and in the whole work to 3825, or there abouts. Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of Australian Birds: Including the Geographical Distribution of the Species and Popular Observations Thereon Biographical Memoir by Dr. R. Bowdler Sharpe in his Analytical Index to the works of the great author. John Gould was born at Lyme, in Dorsetshire, England, 14th Sep tember, 1804, and, when quite an infant, his parents went to live at Stoke Hill, near Guildford and it was in this beautiful neighbourhood that the child first imbibed his notions of the beauty of natural life. When young Gould-was 14 years of age, his father received a good appointment in the Royal Gardens at Windsor, where the boy assisted him in gardening. By this time he had begun the study of birds, and made his first acquaintance with many British species in the royal domains. He was also reported to be a good taxidermist. Excerpt from The Birds of Britain: Their Distribution and Habits T is hoped that this little work, though primarily intended for schools, may be found useful by those who require a short hand-book which includes the results of the most recent observations, and is adapted to modern nomenclature. The author wishes to tender his thanks to Mr W. Eagle Clarke, who is now pre paring a new edition of Yarrell's British Birds, for glancing over the proofs, in order that they may be in general agreement with the forthcoming work; while he cannot fail to recall with great regret the times when he was working in company with the late Howard Saunders, then engaged in compiling his well-known Manual of British Birds, or short form of Yarrell. Excerpt from The British Bird Book, Vol. 1: An Account of All the Birds, Nests and Eggs Found in the British Isles Though we have a considerable body of information at our disposal concerning the habits of our native birds, it would be idle to deny that it must be regarded as very defective when compared with what we know about their structure or even their geographical distribution; so much so that it is impossible, and will no doubt long remain impossible, to systematise it, except to a limited extent, in such a way that the same class of evidence can be recorded with equal exactness and complete ness under the head of each species. To take one example only: it is not possible at present to give, in the case even of many of our commoner birds, a detailed reliable description of the differences in the nuptial displays that occur at the beginning of the breeding season yet one has only to turn over the pages of Darwin, Wallace, and their successors to realise how important is the evidence that the ornithologists might bring to the solution of the vexed question of sexual selection.
