The majority of technology transfer studies done today are derived from Economics and Management Sciences, and there are relatively few studies that examine the geographical concerns of technology transfer from a glocal perspective. Geography of Technology Transfer in China fills the gap by aiming to discover the geographical character of technology transfer and its determinants from the interaction in both global and local scales, which involves the study of innovation geography, economic geography, urban economics, and regional economics.The chapters included in this book present a clear structure of a series of studies performed both theoretically and empirically. The research begins by constructing an analytic framework for urban technology transfer study and abstracts the study target from technological innovation subjects to cities, along with establishing the structure system, the dimension system, and the effect system of urban technology transfer research. This then develops an initial conceptual framework for urban technology transfer research. In addition, it analyses the hierarchy of China's urban technology innovation system and the segmentation of the technology transfer market, from the perspective of technology transfer. All in all, the book aspires to depict the spatial evolution of China's technological innovation system and technology transfer system from a city size perspective, thereby realising the spatial scale of technology transfer study.

Computing and information and communications technology (ICT) has dramatically changed how we work and live, has had profound effects on nearly every sector of society, has transformed whole industries, and is a key component of U.S. global leadership. A fundamental driver of advances in computing and ICT has been the fact that the single-processor performance has, until recently, been steadily and dramatically increasing year over years, based on a combination of architectural techniques, semiconductor advances, and software improvements. Users, developers, and innovators were able to depend on those increases, translating that performance into numerous technological innovations and creating successive generations of ever more rich and diverse products, software services, and applications that had profound effects across all sectors of society. However, we can no longer depend on those extraordinary advances in single-processor performance continuing. This slowdown in the growth of single-processor computing performance has its roots in fundamental physics and engineering constraints-multiple technological barriers have converged to pose deep research challenges, and the consequences of this shift are deep and profound for computing and for the sectors of the economy that depend on and assume, implicitly or explicitly, ever-increasing performance. Innovation, which in essence is the generation of knowledge and its subsequent application in the marketplace in the form of novel products and processes, has become the key concept in inquiries concerning the contemporary knowledge based economy. Geography plays a decisive role in the underlying processes that enable and support knowledge formation and diffusion activities. Place specific characteristics are considered especially important in this context, however, more recently investigation into innovative capacity of places has also turned its attention to external knowledge inputs through innovation networks, and increasingly recognize the evolutionary character of the processes that lead to knowledge creation and subsequent application in the marketplace. The chapters that comprise this book are embedded at the intersection of the dynamic processes of knowledge production and creative destruction.
