Excerpt from Geology of the Gold Belt in the James River Basin Virginia The field studies which form the basis of this report were made by the writer during June, July, and August, 1910, and J uly and part of August, 1911. No attempt has been made to evaluate individual mines or to determine whether they can be operated at a profit, as that is properly the work of the consulting mining engineer and geologist; but such basic problems as the origin and distribution of the ore deposits, and their probable variation in depth - problems which can not be solved by the examination of a single property, or without the expenditure of much time and effort - have been investigated as fully as conditions would permit. Acknowledgments - The writer desires to thank Dr. Thomas L. Watson, State Geologist, under whose supervision the work was done, for the privilege of studying the area, and for his valuable advice and kindly assistance in the preparation of this report. He also wishes to acknowledge the many kindnesses shown him by the different operators in the district. And by others who aided him in the field investigations. The topographic map of the gold belt in the James River. Basin (pl. I) is compiled from the Palmyra, Farmville, Buckingham, and Appomattox sheets of the United States Geological Survey, with corrections inserted by the writer. The traverse maps, used as a base for the detailed geologic work, were compiled chiefly from surveys made by the writer. Control for the detailed map of the gold belt on the north side of James River (pl. II) was furnished by the United States Geological Survey and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and for the arvonia-new Canton map (fig. 2) by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.
