The contents of this monograph fall within the general area of nonlinear functional analysis and applications. We focus on an important topic within this area: geometric properties of Banach spaces and nonlinear iterations, a topic of intensive research e?orts, especially within the past 30 years, or so. In this theory, some geometric properties of Banach spaces play a crucial role. In the ?rst part of the monograph, we expose these geometric properties most of which are well known. As is well known, among all in?nite dim- sional Banach spaces, Hilbert spaces have the nicest geometric properties. The availability of the inner product, the fact that the proximity map or nearest point map of a real Hilbert space H onto a closed convex subset K of H is Lipschitzian with constant 1, and the following two identities 2 2 2 ||x+y|| =||x|| +2 x,y +||y|| , (?) 2 2 2 2 ||?x+(1??)y|| = ?||x|| +(1??)||y|| ??(1??)||x?y|| , (??) which hold for all x,y? H, are some of the geometric properties that char- terize inner product spaces and also make certain problems posed in Hilbert spaces more manageable than those in general Banach spaces. However, as has been rightly observed by M. Hazewinkel, “... many, and probably most, mathematical objects and models do not naturally live in Hilbert spaces”. Consequently, toextendsomeoftheHilbertspacetechniquestomoregeneral Banach spaces, analogues of the identities (?) and (??) have to be developed.

The NLAGA's Biennial International Research Symposium (NLAGA-BIRS) is intended to gather African expertises in Nonlinear Analysis, Geometry and their Applications with their international partners in a four days conference where new mathematical results are presented and discussed. This book features the best papers presented during this Biennial. The different topics addressed are related to Partial Differential Equations, Differential inclusions, Geometrical Analysis of Optimal Shapes, Complex Analysis, Geometric Structures, Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic, Optimization, Optimal Control and Mathematical modeling. The main focus of the NLAGA project is to deepen and consolidate the development in West and Center Africa of Nonlinear Analysis, Geometry and their Applications, aimed at solving in particular real-world problems such as coastal erosion, urban network, pollution problems, and population dynamics.

Symmetries Of Compact Riemann Surfaces written by Emilio Bujalance and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-06 with Mathematics categories.

This monograph deals with symmetries of compact Riemann surfaces. A symmetry of a compact Riemann surface S is an antianalytic involution of S. It is well known that Riemann surfaces exhibiting symmetry correspond to algebraic curves which can be defined over the field of real numbers. In this monograph we consider three topics related to the topology of symmetries, namely the number of conjugacy classes of symmetries, the numbers of ovals of symmetries and the symmetry types of Riemann surfaces.

Ordinary differential equations play a central role in science and have been extended to evolution equations in Banach spaces. For many applications, however, it is difficult to specify a suitable normed vector space. Shapes without a priori restrictions, for example, do not have an obvious linear structure. This book generalizes ordinary differential equations beyond the borders of vector spaces with a focus on the well-posed Cauchy problem in finite time intervals. Here are some of the examples: - Feedback evolutions of compact subsets of the Euclidean space - Birth-and-growth processes of random sets (not necessarily convex) - Semilinear evolution equations - Nonlocal parabolic differential equations - Nonlinear transport equations for Radon measures - A structured population model - Stochastic differential equations with nonlocal sample dependence and how they can be coupled in systems immediately - due to the joint framework of Mutational Analysis. Finally, the book offers new tools for modelling.

Partial Inner Product Spaces written by J-P Antoine and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-08 with Mathematics categories.

Partial Inner Product (PIP) Spaces are ubiquitous, e.g. Rigged Hilbert spaces, chains of Hilbert or Banach spaces (such as the Lebesgue spaces Lp over the real line), etc. In fact, most functional spaces used in (quantum) physics and in signal processing are of this type. The book contains a systematic analysis of PIP spaces and operators defined on them. Numerous examples are described in detail and a large bibliography is provided. Finally, the last chapters cover the many applications of PIP spaces in physics and in signal/image processing, respectively. As such, the book will be useful both for researchers in mathematics and practitioners of these disciplines.

Generalized Bessel Functions Of The First Kind written by Árpád Baricz and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06-17 with Mathematics categories.

In this volume we study the generalized Bessel functions of the first kind by using a number of classical and new findings in complex and classical analysis. Our aim is to present interesting geometric properties and functional inequalities for these generalized Bessel functions. Moreover, we extend many known inequalities involving circular and hyperbolic functions to Bessel and modified Bessel functions.

Regularity And Approximability Of Electronic Wave Functions written by Harry Yserentant and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-19 with Mathematics categories.

The electronic Schrodi ̈ nger equation describes the motion of N electrons under Coulomb interaction forces in a eld of clamped nuclei. Solutions of this equation depend on 3N variables, three spatial dimensions for each electron. Approxim- ing the solutions is thus inordinately challenging, and it is conventionally believed that a reduction to simpli ed models, such as those of the Hartree-Fock method or density functional theory, is the only tenable approach. This book seeks to c- vince the reader that this conventional wisdom need not be ironclad: the regularity of the solutions, which increases with the number of electrons, the decay behavior of their mixed derivatives, and the antisymmetry enforced by the Pauli principle contribute properties that allow these functions to be approximated with an order of complexity which comes arbitrarily close to that for a system of one or two electrons. The present notes arose from lectures that I gave in Berlin during the academic year 2008/09 to introduce beginning graduate students of mathematics into this subject. They are kept on an intermediate level that should be accessible to an audience of this kind as well as to physicists and theoretical chemists with a c- responding mathematical training.

This monograph addresses the global controllability of partial differential equations in the context of multiplicative (or bilinear) controls, which enter the model equations as coefficients. The methodology is illustrated with a variety of model equations.
