The flowering of Gothic architecture depended to a striking extent on the use of drawing as a tool of design. By drawing precise "blueprints" with simple tools such as the compass and straightedge, Gothic draftsmen were able to develop a linearized architecture of unprecedented complexity and sophistication. Examination of their surviving drawings can provide valuable and remarkably intimate information about the Gothic design process. Gothic drawings include compass pricks, uninked construction lines, and other telltale traces of the draftsman's geometrically based working method. The proportions of the drawings, moreover, are those actually intended by the designer, uncompromised by errors introduced in the construction process. All of these features make these drawings ideal subjects for the study of Gothic design practice, but their geometry has to date received little systematic attention. This book offers a new perspective on Gothic architectural creativity. It shows, in a series of rigorous geometrical case studies, how Gothic design evolved over time, in two senses: in the hours of the draftsman's labor, and across the centuries of the late Middle Ages. In each case study, a series of computer graphics show in unprecedented detail how a medieval designer could have developed his architectural concept step by step, using only basic geometrical operations. Taken together, these analyses demonstrate both remarkable methodological continuity across the Gothic era, and the progressive development of new and sophisticated permutations on venerable design themes. This rich tradition ultimately gave way in the Renaissance not because of any inherent problem with Gothic architecture, but because the visual language of Classicism appealed more directly to the pretensions of Humanist princes than the more abstract geometrical order of Gothic design, as the book's final chapter demonstrates.

An illustrated guide to harmonics--the sacred geometry principles that underlie the natural world--and its practical applications • Demonstrates how the vesica piscis is a matrix from which ideas and forms emanate, connecting cosmic time cycles, measures of space, and musical tones • Provides harmonic analyses of ancient sculpture, architecture, the solar system, the Earth-Moon relationship, and the structure of water and waves • Explains how to apply sacred geometry to create building floor plans, pottery figures, gardens, and sacred ceremonial spaces We are in the midst of a revival of an ancient way of looking at the world--an approach that enabled great civilizations of the past to bring forth inventions of great beauty and power. This school of thought--harmonics--envisioned the natural world and the solar system as an interlocking matrix of harmonious numbers, perfectly woven into the creative fabric of life and the surrounding universe. Exploring the art and science of harmonics, John Oscar Lieben shows how to create harmonious forms using the ancient tools of number, geometry, and musical tone--an approach that resonates with nature’s own ways of creation. He demonstrates many practical applications that result from the study of harmonics, providing analyses of ancient sculpture and architecture, as well as original examples of building floor plans, pottery figures based on planetary proportions, gardens based on harmonic principles, and ceremonial spaces that honor cosmic harmonies and sacred geometric relationships. Showing how harmonics can also be applied to the mysteries of time and space, the author demonstrates how the vesica piscis and many other variations of the vesica shape reveal numerical synchronicities and correspondences that connect cosmic time cycles, measures of space, and musical tones. The author applies harmonics and the “vesica construction” matrix to illustrate many of nature’s wonders, including the Earth-Moon relationship, the interactions of the Golden Number and the musical scale, and how the Flower of Life symbol connects the universal field with the pattern of raindrops falling on a pond. Offering an approach to sacred geometry that pairs the mystical with the practical, the cosmic with the earthly, the author reveals how the art and science of harmonics should be required study for both the artist and the seeker of eternal truths as well as the scientist who seeks an entrance into the sacred foundations of nature.

(This book probably isn't for you, unless you understood “The Structure of Creation”).You are about to read a book profound as the depths of any abyss found in the world and alive as any waterfall propelling itself into the rocky depths. The book is difficult to understand even though crystal clear. It takes (quite) a few readings but the fruits are more than worth it. Just a word here to help the reader. The forms referred to here, the lines and points of the Star of David are axiomatic and primordial and arise almost before and simultaneously with thought. They are based on the numbers one to nine and never leave that basic, primeval realm. These are the numbers of Creation and what is also above and beyond Creation and now the rest is for you to read and imbibe.

Why is it that we are so drawn to and enticed by sacred geometry? They start with simple mathematical shapes, that combine to create elaborate illustrations of such beauty and elegance that we marvel at them. Beliefs, religious, spiritual and cultural, have been historically attached to them. The specific design and creation of each individual sacred geometric pattern is thought, among many cultures, not only to demonstrate an understanding of specific universal concepts, but to hold powers of mystical possibilities. The aim of this book is to provide an understanding of the history, creation and meanings of sacred geometry for those who are new to the subject, and to open an insight into the beliefs placed upon them with the hope that it will inspire the reader's interest and imagination and increase their enthusiasm. Enjoy learning how such simple shapes can evolve into inspiring and powerful patterns that weave through the fabric of our entire universe and reality.

Sacred numbers arose from ancient man's observation of the heavens, and represent the secrets of cosmic proportion and alignment. The ancients understood that the ripeness of the natural world is the perfection of ratio and that the planetary system--and time itself--is a creation of number. We have forgotten what our ancestors once knew: that numbers and their properties create the forms of the world.

The book reveals a deep connection between Geometry, God's Love and the Self by focusing on the Geometry of Creation and patterns behind shapes, events and feelings. A selfward journey is signposted by the topics such as Numbers, Golden Proportion, Fractals, Spirals and Music. With its artistic fusion of written and the full colour visual elements the book informs, entertains and inspires. The foreword is written by Egyptian architects Dr Ibrahim F. Karim MEMENTO 13 will appeal to a wide audience because it bridges the gap between writings on self-discovery intended for the academic and those designated for the layperson. It is meant to equally intrigue philosophers, scientists, architects, artists, as well as general readers who want to understand more about the fascinating properties of geometry and numbers and their relationship to the Creation, life, art and the self. The book is structured through 13 chapters. Author intertwines disciplines, cultures, ages, topics of visible and invisible, physical and metaphysical, Earth and Sky, into a unique tapestry of scientific and spiritual knowledge. Reinforced by a distinctive visual beauty, with 360 captioned illustrations, produced in full colour Memento 13 is an extraordinary book on geometric paths that Creator's Love and Consciousness travel through, leading us to His Essence in our own being. The book is an authentic contribution to the topic of sacred geometry and spiritual growth. Author explores the bigger picture of life in which everything is interconnected in a perfect (geometrical) order, wherein individual behaviour unmistakably impacts on others and the whole. She highlights that recognising the Oneness of Creation is the key to comprehending the truth of life and the self. While exploring mathematical dimension of the self through the topics such as Numbers, Golden Proportion, Fractals, Spirals and Music, Memento 13 blends science and spirituality into one wisdom.

Understanding the role of sacred geometry in cosmology and human affairs • Explains how ancient societies that grasped the timeless principles of sacred geometry were able to create flourishing societies • Illustrates the social and spiritual values in the natural progression of number • Contains more than 300 full-color drawings showing the interplay of number and sacred geometry Galileo described the universe as a large book written in the language of mathematics, which can only be read by those with knowledge of its characters--triangles, circles, and other geometrical figures. The laws of geometry are not human inventions. They are found ready-made in nature and hold a truth that is the same in all times and all places and is older than the world itself. In How the World Is Made John Michell explains how ancient societies that grasped the timeless principles of sacred geometry were able to create flourishing societies. His more than 300 full-color illustrations reveal the secret code within these geometrical figures and how they express the spiritual meanings in the key numbers of 1 through 12. For example, the number 8 and its octagon are symbols of peace and stability, the holy 7 and its seven-sided figure are connected to the world-soul. He identifies the various regular shapes and shows their constructions; their natural symbolism; their meetings, matings, and ways of breeding; and their functions within the universal order. Some are musical and structural, others relate to life and humanity. In the process of making these discoveries, Michell helps us see the world in a new light. Disparate shapes and their corresponding numbers are woven together, resolving themselves into an all-inclusive world image--that “pattern in the heavens,” as Socrates called it, “which anyone can find and establish within themselves.”
