On September 1-7, 1996 a conference on Groups and Geometries took place in lovely Siena, Italy. It brought together experts and interested mathematicians from numerous countries. The scientific program centered around invited exposi tory lectures; there also were shorter research announcements, including talks by younger researchers. The conference concerned a broad range of topics in group theory and geometry, with emphasis on recent results and open problems. Special attention was drawn to the interplay between group-theoretic methods and geometric and combinatorial ones. Expanded versions of many of the talks appear in these Proceedings. This volume is intended to provide a stimulating collection of themes for a broad range of algebraists and geometers. Among those themes, represented within the conference or these Proceedings, are aspects of the following: 1. the classification of finite simple groups, 2. the structure and properties of groups of Lie type over finite and algebraically closed fields of finite characteristic, 3. buildings, and the geometry of projective and polar spaces, and 4. geometries of sporadic simple groups. We are grateful to the authors for their efforts in providing us with manuscripts in LaTeX. Barbara Priwitzer and Thomas Hintermann, Mathematics Editors of Birkhauser, have been very helpful and supportive throughout the preparation of this volume.

This book presents an original approach to the theory of finite groups, placing finite sporadic groups on an equal footing. It provides a nearly comprehensive overview of developments in the study of sporadic groups since the classification of finite simple groups was completed. Authored by one of the key contributors to these developments, a major theme of the book is the growing role that geometry has played in this story in the form of diagram geometries, amalgams, graph theory and “pushing up”. The chapters interweave various ideas and techniques applicable to all sporadic groups. Many of the results presented—several due to the author and collaborators—appear in book form for the first time. While much of the book describes developments from recent decades, it also includes significant new material, notably on the enigmatic Thompson group and the Monster. The final chapter explores connections to Majorana algebras and discusses some remarkable conjectures. A valuable addition to the literature on finite simple groups, this book will appeal to a wide audience, from advanced graduate students to researchers in group theory, combinatorics, finite geometry, coding theory, graph theory, and other mathematical fields that use group theory to study symmetries and structures.

Thisbookisintendedasanintroductiontoallthe?nitesimplegroups.During themonumentalstruggletoclassifythe?nitesimplegroups(andindeedsince), a huge amount of information about these groups has been accumulated. Conveyingthisinformationtothenextgenerationofstudentsandresearchers, not to mention those who might wish to apply this knowledge, has become a major challenge. With the publication of the two volumes by Aschbacher and Smith [12, 13] in 2004 we can reasonably regard the proof of the Classi?cation Theorem for Finite Simple Groups (usually abbreviated CFSG) as complete. Thus it is timely to attempt an overview of all the (non-abelian) ?nite simple groups in one volume. For expository purposes it is convenient to divide them into four basic types, namely the alternating, classical, exceptional and sporadic groups. The study of alternating groups soon develops into the theory of per- tation groups, which is well served by the classic text of Wielandt [170]and more modern treatments such as the comprehensive introduction by Dixon and Mortimer [53] and more specialised texts such as that of Cameron [19].

This volume contains contributions by the participants of the conference "Groups and Computation", which took place at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, in June 1999. This conference was the successor of two workshops on "Groups and Computation" held at DIMACS in 1991 and 1995. There are papers on permutation group algorithms, finitely presented groups, polycyclic groups, and parallel computation, providing a representative sample of the breadth of Computational Group Theory. On the other hand, more than one third of the papers deal with computations in matrix groups, giving an in-depth treatment of the currently most active area of the field. The points of view of the papers range from explicit computations to group-theoretic algorithms to group-theoretic theorems needed for algorithm development.

This book is a blend of recent developments in theoretical and computational aspects of group theory. It presents the state-of-the-art research topics in different aspects of group theory, namely, character theory, representation theory, integral group rings, the Monster simple group, computational algorithms and methods on finite groups, finite loops, periodic groups, Camina groups and generalizations, automorphisms and non-abelian tensor product of groups. Presenting a collection of invited articles by some of the leading and highly active researchers in the theory of finite groups and their representations and the Monster group, with a focus on computational aspects, this book is of particular interest to researchers in the area of group theory and related fields of mathematics.
