Whether as a statesman, military man, or America's first president, George Washington was a legend in his own lifetime, so renowned in fact that the adulation has knit together making it difficult to find the real man. Here, constitutional scholar and editor John P. Kaminski has plumbed the depth of 30 years-worth of his own research to amass an extraordinary body of quotations by and about Washington to paint an intimate word portrait that brings us closer to the essence of America's "man of action."

Perhaps no other person could ever achieve the preeminent position in American history and culture occupied by George Washington. Born in 1732, Washington’s life–long commitment to self-improvement and discipline helped him become a legend in his own lifetime. Whether as a statesman, military man, or America’s first president, Washington created a legacy that has scarcely diminished in over two centuries. Yet the passage of time and the superlatives reserved for Washington have knit together and made it difficult to find the real man. Historian and editor John P. Kaminski has amassed an extraordinary body of quotations by and about George Washington that brings us closer to the essence of this great leader. This collection paints an intricate picture of the man who Henry 'Lighthorse' Lee of Virginia eulogized as: "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen."

George Washington may be the most famous American who ever lived, and certainly is one of the most admired. While surrounded by myths, it is no myth that the man who led Americans’ fight for independence and whose two terms in office largely defined the presidency was the most highly respected individual among a generation of formidable personalities. This record hints at an enigmatic perfection; however, Washington was a flesh-and-blood man. In First and Always, celebrated historian Peter Henriques illuminates Washington’s life, more fully explicating his character and his achievements. Arranged thematically, the book’s chapters focus on important and controversial issues, achieving a depth not possible in a traditional biography. First and Always examines factors that coalesced to make Washington such a remarkable and admirable leader, while also chronicling how Washington mistreated some of his enslaved workers, engaged in extreme partisanship, and responded with excessive sensitivity to criticism. Henriques portrays a Washington deeply ambitious and always hungry for public adoration, even as he disclaimed such desires. In its account of an amazing life, First and Always shows how, despite profound flaws, George Washington nevertheless deserves to rank as the nation's most consequential leader, without whom the American experiment in republican government would have died in infancy.

"not merely a well-written biography of a man who achieved fame as much through circumstance and by reason of outstanding ability, but is also a succinct account of many of the incidents and personalities of the War of Independence. It should be welcomed by admirers of Washington who are tired of the sacrosanct air surrounding him and by readers of American history and biography; it should also find a place in public, historical and college libraries and, of course, in all collections of 'Washingtoniana'." - Kirkus Reviews Marcus Cunliffe traces the ancestral background, the childhood, the growth, the failures and achievements of George Washington. He shows readers a real person - flawed, ambitious, impatient of criticism - providing a portrait of one of America's greatest leaders. This brilliant study of Washington's life and times separates fact from fiction to present a man stripped of myth - his great and lasting achievements all the more admirable for his human fallibility. MARCUS CUNLIFFE (1922-1990) was a British-born historian who wrote more than a dozen books on American history and literature. A commentator on American life, he had been University Professor at George Washington University since 1980. He was a prolific writer, focusing extensively on George Washington and the early history of the United States. George Washington: Man and Monument was first published in 1958.

George Washington Parke Custis (1781-1857) was raised at Mount Vernon by George and Martha Washington. Young "Wash" appears in Savage's 1789 painting of the first presidential family, his small hand placed symbolically on a globe. He would later make his mark on the national landscape by building Arlington House on the Potomac. A poor student, he emerged as an agricultural reformer and sought-after Federalist orator. He championed the plights of Irish Americans and war veterans. An important memoirist, he wrote well-received theatrical works and produced paintings rich in historical detail. Inheriting much of the vast Custis fortune, he also became the enslaver of more than 200 people. The slow march toward their emancipation became the central struggle of his life, particularly after his daughter's 1831 marriage to Robert E. Lee. This first full-length biography of Custis offers a 21st century reappraisal of life that dramatically bridged the American Revolution and the Civil War.
