Georgia, A New York Story is a character-driven novel that takes the reader on a stimulating, suspenseful, journey filled with humor, sadness, friendship and affirmation. Its engaging stories and quirky characters come together to form an arresting emotional mosaic of survival. Georgia, a sixty-year-old professor of Musical theatre and Drama therapy, heads a colorful but complicated extended family in New York City during the latter half of 2001. Her Chelsea home is a haven for her ever-growing eclectic family of straight and gay friends, students, and neighbors who come and go at will. Even-keeled, John, Georgia's younger husband, and Val, their twenty-one year old aspiring videographer daughter, support Georgia's need to create a safe space with rules and standards where there is never an abandoned soul. The newest arrivals to this loving household include: forty-year old Horace, a hapless poet desperate to gain acceptance from his dysfunctional family and achieve marriage with an unknown foreign girl he corresponds with via the Internet; nephew Nick, the eight-year-old son of her imperceptive brother and his deceitful, alcoholic wife; and Kasey, an intelligent, kind-hearted, terrified teenage runaway, whose dark secret threatens to destroy any chance for future happiness. Musical theatre and New York historical references are sprinkled throughout this first novel that covers a variety of themes in serious, humorous and visual ways. The story and its characters are psychologically complex and the author addresses the importance of family systems, therapy and creative expression. Georgia, a New York Story is the perfect choice for book clubs as the characters are multi-generational. Topics for discussion are unlimited and may include: surviving emotional and physical abuse; co dependency; relationships; enabling; coming out; confronting your attacker, and surviving life with humor and love. REVIEWS "Not since Armistead Maupin has a novelist written so poignantly about the importance of a person's logical family and the challenges of one's bio-logical family. As an Expressive Arts Therapist and former Drama therapy Teacher, it is refreshing to see a Drama Therapist as a three dimensional main character in a book that is psychologically complex and addresses the importance of family systems, therapy, and creative expression. In Carol Lucha-Burns' moving first novel, Georgia, A New York Story, we are invited into the lives of an eclectic multigenerational group of people all looking to find their way in post 9-11 New York City." - Dr. Deah Schwartz, Co-author of Leftovers: An Expressive Arts Therapy Resource for Eating Disorders and Body Image and author of the syndicated blog, Dr. Deah's Tasty Morsels. You can visit her at http: //www.drdeah.com. "I loved the character of Georgia, in Georgia, A New York Story. She is a fun, adventurous, witty, wise and feisty role model for people of all ages. This lady should have her own talk show. We could learn much from her." - Sharon Stevens, Author of Bitch Lifestyle the Manual. http: //www.BitchLifestyle.com. "Georgia, a New York Story reads (aloud) very well and takes you right in. The character driven plotting has good suspense and keeps us wanting to find out what happens to the characters in their fixes, like in Dick Francis stories." - Scott Buxton, Actor, Audio Books.

AN OBSERVER BOOK OF THE YEAR ‘That night Stasia took an oath, swearing to learn the recipe by heart and destroy the paper. And when she was lying in her bed again, recalling the taste with all her senses, she was sure that this secret recipe could heal wounds, avert catastrophes, and bring people happiness. But she was wrong.’ At the start of the twentieth century, on the edge of the Russian Empire, a family prospers. It owes its success to a delicious chocolate recipe, passed down the generations with great solemnity and caution. A caution which is justified: this is a recipe for ecstasy that carries a very bitter aftertaste … Stasia learns it from her Georgian father and takes it north, following her new husband, Simon, to his posting at the centre of the Russian Revolution in St Petersburg. Stasia’s is only the first in a symphony of grand but all too often doomed romances that swirl from sweet to sour in this epic tale of the red century. Tumbling down the years, and across vast expanses of longing and loss, generation after generation of this compelling family hears echoes and sees reflections. Great characters and greater relationships come and go and come again; the world shakes, and shakes some more, and the reader rejoices to have found at last one of those glorious old books in which you can live and learn, be lost and found, and make indelible new friends.

The magazine that is the city that is the world Just in time for its fortieth anniversary, New York magazine presents a stunning collection of some of its best and most influential articles, stories that captured the spectacle, the turbulence, and the cultural realignments of the past four decades. Covering subjects from “Radical Chic” to Gawker.com, written by some of the country’s most renowned authors, here are works that broke news, perfectly captured the moment, or set trends in motion. In New York Stories, Gloria Steinem (whose Ms. Magazine was introduced in New York) broaches the subject of women’s liberation; Tom Wolfe coins “The Me Decade”; and Steve Fishman piercingly portrays the unwanted martyrdom of the 9/11 widows. Cutting edge features that invented terms like “brat pack” and “grup”; profiles of defining cultural figures including Joe Namath, Truman Capote, and long-shot presidential candidate Bill Clinton; and reports that inspired the acclaimed movies Saturday Night Fever, GoodFellas, and Grey Gardens–all are included in this one-of-a-kind compilation. The writers who chronicled the times that began with Nixon’s campaign and end with Obama’s are at their best in New York Stories. It’s an irresistible anthology from a magazine that, like the city itself, is still making stars, setting standards, and going strong.

He was a dominant figure in the affairs of Georgia during the last decade of his life and was at the center of the Yazoo controversy, where he worked for the repeal of the land sales. "[A] vital investigation of Forsyth’s history, and of the process by which racial injustice is perpetuated in America." —U.S. Congressman John Lewis Forsyth County, Georgia, at the turn of the twentieth century, was home to a large African American community that included ministers and teachers, farmers and field hands, tradesmen, servants, and children. But then in September of 1912, three young black laborers were accused of raping and murdering a white girl. One man was dragged from a jail cell and lynched on the town square, two teenagers were hung after a one-day trial, and soon bands of white “night riders” launched a coordinated campaign of arson and terror, driving all 1,098 black citizens out of the county. The charred ruins of homes and churches disappeared into the weeds, until the people and places of black Forsyth were forgotten. National Book Award finalist Patrick Phillips tells Forsyth’s tragic story in vivid detail and traces its long history of racial violence all the way back to antebellum Georgia. Recalling his own childhood in the 1970s and ’80s, Phillips sheds light on the communal crimes of his hometown and the violent means by which locals kept Forsyth “all white” well into the 1990s. In precise, vivid prose, Blood at the Root delivers a "vital investigation of Forsyth’s history, and of the process by which racial injustice is perpetuated in America" (Congressman John Lewis).

This book is written for those of us who love Georgia Bulldogs Football and who cannot wait until our next win. There is no need to be impatient because as of 2022, Georgia is now at the top of the pack and the Bulldogs win big games all the time. Ask the others! In 2022, of course we all know, Georgia became the College Football Champions. The founding of the University was in 1785 and before Georgia eventually played its first football game, the first book was read at UGA right after Abraham Baldwin of the University of Georgia drafted legislation that became the charter of the university. Georgia student life moved quickly as the first student organization was founded as the Demosthenian Literary Society was founded. The first commencement was held with Josiah Miggs, President presiding in 1804. For its first 50 years the school was known as Franklin College. Soon after being established, Charles Herty got football going on campus in the fall of 1886 and UGA played its first intercollegiate football game. It took a while but in 1929, the school built its first stadium Sanford Stadium. The rest of the college football is not necessarily thrilled that Georgia became so good, so fast, and now they are recognized as the best team in the nation. Georgia won its first National Championship in 1942. In 1980, Georgia repeated its national championship with freshman Herschel Walker leading the way. The Bulldogs remained a national powerhouse with a lot of close calls to greatness until 2022 when it again won another National Championship with a coach who was a great Georgia graduate. Go Bulldogs! This book captures the whole great story of Georgia football. It takes the reader through stories about Georgia’s great immortal coaches and great players over the years. You will not be able to put this book down.

Eastern Cherokee Stories written by Sandra Muse Isaacs and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-10 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

“Throughout our Cherokee history,” writes Joyce Dugan, former principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, “our ancient stories have been the essence of who we are.” These traditional stories embody the Cherokee concepts of Gadugi, working together for the good of all, and Duyvkta, walking the right path, and teach listeners how to understand and live in the world with reverence for all living things. In Eastern Cherokee Stories, Sandra Muse Isaacs uses the concepts of Gadugi and Duyvkta to explore the Eastern Cherokee oral tradition, and to explain how storytelling in this tradition—as both an ancient and a contemporary literary form—is instrumental in the perpetuation of Cherokee identity and culture. Muse Isaacs worked among the Eastern Cherokees of North Carolina, recording stories and documenting storytelling practices and examining the Eastern Cherokee oral tradition as both an ancient and contemporary literary form. For the descendants of those Cherokees who evaded forced removal by the U.S. government in the 1830s, storytelling has been a vital tool of survival and resistance—and as Muse Isaacs shows us, this remains true today, as storytelling plays a powerful role in motivating and educating tribal members and others about contemporary issues such as land reclamation, cultural regeneration, and language revitalization. The stories collected and analyzed in this volume range from tales of creation and origins that tell about the natural world around the homeland, to post-Removal stories that often employ Native humor to present the Cherokee side of history to Cherokee and non-Cherokee alike. The persistence of this living oral tradition as a means to promote nationhood and tribal sovereignty, to revitalize culture and language, and to present the Indigenous view of history and the land bears testimony to the tenacity and resilience of the Cherokee people, the Ani-Giduwah.
