Georgy is young, gregarious and fun - she is also large, self-confessedly ugly and desperate for love. Georgy bears her fate bravely as she alternates between playing the fool and humbling herself before Meredith, her pretty, callous flatmate, although when James, middle-aged socialite and self-imposed 'Uncle', asks Georgy to become his mistress, she is tempted to accept. Then Meredith announces that she is pregnant and Jos, the expectant father, decides he is in love with Georgy...

Georgy Girl is better known as Daisy to her family and friends. The name Georgy Girl was bestowed upon her by a pesty kid who lives on the other side of the back fence and it wasn't to her liking. Daisy is a few years younger than her annoying neighbour. She comes from an outlying area of Tacloban City in Leyte in the Philippines. Like most people in her neighbourhood, Daisy's family are common Filipinos who are always struggling to make ends meet. Daisy was a ten year old school girl when her home town was destroyed by Typhoon Yolanda. There was virtually nothing left of the only world she knew. After Typhoon Yolanda, Daisy goes to Manila where she lives in a totally different environment. She stays in a slum area in Manila. The slum area comes with its own unique lifestyle which makes her former humble home look like a paradise.Daisy gets acquainted with new neighbours and different friends in Manila. She sees her fair share of life on the outer in the slum area. The people around her experience a bit more than their share of trauma and see plenty of the downside of life. After three years in Manila, Daisy goes back to Tacloban City which has been repaired since she was last there. She gets re-acquainted with old friends and familiar faces in her former home town. Georgy Girl is a novel about the Philippines. It looks at life through the eyes of ordinary common Filipino folk. It's about living among the poor and downtrodden in society. Living where the means of survival is harsh and the trials of life are rigorous and grueling. Trying to survive in a place where calamities are frequent and disasters occur regularly.

The 1960s was a decade of massive political and cultural change in Western Europe, as seismic shifts took place in in attitudes towards sexuality, gender, and motherhood in everyday life. Through case studies of British and French films, Pepsi and the Pill offers a fresh vision of a pivotal moment in European culture, exploring the many ways in which political activity and celebrated film movements mutually shaped each other in their views on gender, sexuality, and domesticity. As the specter of popular nationalism once again looms across Europe, this book offers a timely account of the legacy of crucial debates over issues including reproductive rights, migration, and reproductive nationalism at the intersection of political discourse, protest, and film.
