This book is the second in a series that examines how geographic information te- nologies (GIT) are being implemented to improve our understanding of a variety of hazard and disaster situations. The main types of technologies covered under the umbrella of GIT, as used in this volume, are geographic information systems, remote sensing (not including ground-penetrating or underwater systems), and global po- tioning systems. Our focus is on urban areas, broadly de ned in order to encompass rapidly growing and densely populated areas that may not be considered “urban” in the conventional sense. The material presented here is also unabashedly applied – our goal is to provide GIT tools to those seeking more ef cient ways to respond to, recover from, mitigate, prevent, and/or model hazard and disaster events in urban settings. Therefore, this book was created not only with our colleagues in the academic world in mind, but also for hazards professionals and practitioners. We also believe graduate students will nd the material presented here of interest, as may upper division undergraduate students.

This book is essential for anyone interested in understanding and implementing sustainable resource development strategies, as it covers the crucial first stage of assessing resource availability and condition, along with the use of modern geospatial technologies such as remote sensing, GIS, and GPS for surveying, mapping, and monitoring various resources for global environmental protection and sustainable development. The first step in developing a sustainable resource strategy is assessing the availability and condition of resources. This involves evaluating baseline levels, identifying trends, and understanding their consequences. Mitigation policies are then developed based on this assessment. Modern geospatial technologies like Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) offer powerful tools for surveying, mapping, and monitoring both renewable and nonrenewable resources. These technologies support global environmental protection, disaster management, and sustainable development by providing repetitive and global data. GPS provides accurate geographic coordinates, while GIS allows visualization, analysis, and decision-making through spatial data, enabling the study of complex environmental and natural resource challenges at various scales.

This open access book is a consolidation of lessons learnt and experiences gathered from our efforts to utilise Earth observation (EO) science and applications to address environmental challenges in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. It includes a complete package of knowledge on service life cycles including multi-disciplinary topics and practically tested applications for the HKH. It comprises 19 chapters drawing from a decade’s worth of experience gleaned over the course of our implementation of SERVIR-HKH – a joint initiative of NASA, USAID, and ICIMOD – to build capacity on using EO and geospatial technology for effective decision making in the region. The book highlights SERVIR’s approaches to the design and delivery of information services – in agriculture and food security; land cover and land use change, and ecosystems; water resources and hydro-climatic disasters; and weather and climate services. It also touches upon multidisciplinary topics such as service planning; gender integration; user engagement; capacity building; communication; and monitoring, evaluation, and learning. We hope that this book will be a good reference document for professionals and practitioners working in remote sensing, geographic information systems, regional and spatial sciences, climate change, ecosystems, and environmental analysis. Furthermore, we are hopeful that policymakers, academics, and other informed audiences working in sustainable development and evaluation – beyond the wider SERVIR network and well as within it – will greatly benefit from what we share here on our applications, case studies, and documentation across cross-cutting topics.
