Beginning with a critical evaluation of experimental and sampling design, the book moves on to explain essential concepts of probability, statistical significance and type 1 and type 2 error. An accessible graphical explanation of analysis of variance (ANOVA) leads onto advanced ANOVA designs, correlation and regression, and non-parametric tests including chi-square. Finally, it introduces the essentials of multivariate techniques, multi-dimensional scaling and cluster analysis, analysis of sequences and concepts of spatial analysis. Illustrated with wide-ranging examples from topics across the Earth and environmental sciences, Geostatistics Explained can be used for undergraduate courses or for self-study and reference. Worked examples at the end of each chapter reinforce a clear understanding of the statistical tests and their applications.

From the Foreword: `The chief aim of this book is to present the reader with an integrated system of methods dealing with geographical statistics (`geostatistics') and their applications. It sums up developments based on the vast experience accumulated by Professor Bachi over several decades of research. Interest in the quantitative locational aspects of geography and in the common ground of geography and statistics has grown rapidly, involving an ever-increasing spectrum of scientific disciplines ... the present volume will fill a genuine need - as a textbook, as a reference work, and as a practical aid for geographers, applied statisticians, demographers, ecologists, regional planners, economists, professional staff of official statistical agencies, and others.' - E. Peritz, G. Nathan, N. Kadmon.

This fully revised third edition introduces geostatistics by emphasising the multivariate aspects for scientists, engineers and statisticians. Geostatistics offers a variety of models, methods and techniques for the analysis, estimation and display of multivariate data distributed in space or time. The text contains a brief review of statistical concepts, a detailed introduction to linear geostatistics, and an account of 3 basic methods of multivariate analysis. Applications from different areas of science, as well as exercises with solutions, are provided to help convey the general ideas. The introductory chapter has been divided into two separate sections for clarity. The final section deals with non-stationary geostatistics.

An Introduction To Statistical Problem Solving In Geography written by Arthur J. Lembo, Jr. and has been published by Waveland Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-27 with Science categories.
The fourth edition of An Introduction to Statistical Problem Solving in Geography continues its standing as the definitive introduction to statistics and quantitative analysis in geography. Assuming no reader background in statistics, the authors lay out the proper role of statistical analysis and methods in human and physical geography. They delve into the calculation of descriptive summaries and graphics to explain geographic patterns and use inferential statistics (parametric and nonparametric) to test for differences (t-tests, ANOVA), relationships (regression and correlation), and spatial statistics (point and area patterns, spatial autocorrelation). This edition introduces more advanced topics, including logistic regression, two-factor ANOVA, and spatial estimation (inverse distance weighting, Kriging). Many chapters also include thought-provoking discussions of statistical concepts as they relate to the COVID-19 pandemic. Maintaining an exploratory and investigative approach throughout, the authors provide readers with real-world geographic issues and more than 50 map examples. Concepts are explained clearly and narratively without oversimplification. Each chapter concludes with a list of major goals and objectives. An epilogue offers over 150 open-ended geographic situations, inviting students to apply their new statistical skills to solve problems currently affecting our world.

Modern Spatiotemporal Geostatistics written by George Christakos and has been published by Courier Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-26 with Science categories.
This scholarly introductory treatment explores the fundamentals of modern geostatistics, viewing them as the product of the advancement of the epistemic status of stochastic data analysis. The book's main focus is the Bayesian maximum entropy approach for studying spatiotemporal distributions of natural variables, an approach that offers readers a deeper understanding of the role of geostatistics in improved mathematical models of scientific mapping. Starting with a overview of the uses of spatiotemporal mapping in the natural sciences, the text explores spatiotemporal geometry, the epistemic paradigm, the mathematical formulation of the Bayesian maximum entropy method, and analytical expressions of the posterior operator. Additional topics include uncertainty assessment, single- and multi-point analytical formulations, and popular methods. An innovative contribution to the field of space and time analysis, this volume offers many potential applications in epidemiology, geography, biology, and other fields.

The Second European Conference on Geostatistics for Environmental Ap plications took place in Valencia, November 18-20, 1998. Two years have past from the first meeting in Lisbon and the geostatistical community has kept active in the environmental field. In these days of congress inflation, we feel that continuity can only be achieved by ensuring quality in the papers. For this reason, all papers in the book have been reviewed by, at least, two referees, and care has been taken to ensure that the reviewer comments have been incorporated in the final version of the manuscript. We are thankful to the members of the scientific committee for their timely review of the scripts. All in all, there are three keynote papers from experts in soil science, climatology and ecology and 43 contributed papers providing a good indication of the status of geostatistics as applied in the environ mental field all over the world. We feel now confident that the geoENV conference series, seeded around a coffee table almost six years ago, will march firmly into the next century.
