Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering written by Steven L. Kramer and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-11-29 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This fully updated second edition provides an introduction to geotechnical earthquake engineering for first-year graduate students in geotechnical or earthquake engineering graduate programs with a level of detail that will also be useful for more advanced students as well as researchers and practitioners. It begins with an introduction to seismology and earthquake ground motions, then presents seismic hazard analysis and performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) principles. Dynamic soil properties pertinent to earthquake engineering applications are examined, both to facilitate understanding of soil response to seismic loads and to describe their practical measurement as part of site characterization. These topics are followed by site response and its analysis and soil–structure interaction. Ground failure in the form of soil liquefaction, cyclic softening, surface fault rupture, and seismically induced landslides are also addressed, and the book closes with a chapter on soil improvement and hazard mitigation. The first edition has been widely used around the world by geotechnical engineers as well as many seismologists and structural engineers. The main text of this book and the four appendices: • Cover fundamental concepts in applied seismology, geotechnical engineering, and structural dynamics. • Contain numerous references for further reading, allowing for detailed exploration of background or more advanced material. • Present worked example problems that illustrate the application of key concepts emphasized in the text. • Include chapter summaries that emphasize the most important points. • Present concepts of performance-based earthquake engineering with an emphasis on uncertainty and the types of probabilistic analyses needed to implement PBEE in practice. • Present a broad, interdisciplinary narrative, drawing from the fields of seismology, geotechnical engineering, and structural engineering to facilitate holistic understanding of how geotechnical earthquake engineering is applied in seismic hazard and risk analyses and in seismic design.

Practical Soil Dynamics written by Milutin Srbulov and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-17 with Science categories.

The objective of this book is to fill some of the gaps in the existing engineering codes and standards related to soil dynamics, concerning issues in earthquake engineering and ground vibrations, by using formulas and hand calculators. The usefulness and accuracy of the simple analyses are demonstrated by their implementation to the case histories available in the literature. Ideally, the users of the volume will be able to comment on the analyses as well as provide more case histories of simple considerations by publishing their results in a number of international journals and conferences. The ultimate aim is to extend the existing codes and standards by adding new widely accepted analyses in engineering practice. The following topics have been considered in this volume: • main ground motion sources and properties • typical ground motions, recording, ground investigations and testing • soil properties used in simple analyses • fast sliding in non-liquefied soil • flow of liquefied sandy soil • massive retaining walls • slender retaining walls • shallow foundations • piled foundations • tunnels, vertical shafts and pipelines • ground vibration caused by industry. Audience: This book is of interest to geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, earthquake engineers and students

Energy Measurement In The Standard Penetration Test written by William D. Kovacs and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with Soil penetration test categories.

Geotechnical engineers in the United States commonly use the Standard Penetration Test, SPT, in subsurface investigation for routine foundation designs. It has been said that perhaps up to 80 to 90 percent of the routine foundation designs are accomplished by the use of the SPT 'N' value. Despite efforts to standardize more details of the SPT procedure, variability between tests is inherent under present guidelines. A field measurement system and procedure which measures the energy delivered by a drill rig system were developed and successfully used to study the factors which affect delivered energy. Results are presented which indicate the energy delivered by certain drill rig systems used in engineering practice. Also, the transmission characteristics of certain hammer/anvil systems are examined. Guidance on the need to measure the actual fall height of the hammer during the Standard Penetration Test is provided based on the findings of the study.
