Eind vorige eeuw maakte hij met een zelden vertoond aplomb zijn opwachting in de stijlkamers van de Nederlandse poëzie. Aan antichambreren had deze brutale vlerk volstrekt maling. Hij banjerde de voorportalen door alsof ze er niet waren en stootte met een leven als een oordeel gelijk door naar de pronkzaal des huizes. Hier ben ik, schalde de dichter van de vierkante man, en waag het niet mij de deur te wijzen. Eenmaal van de schrik bekomen voelde niemand daartoe maar de minste behoefte. De bundel van de vierkante man werd bejubeld en bekroond met de C. Buddingh'-prijs en genomineerd voor de VSB Poëzieprijs. Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer deed er vervolgens niet lang over om ook naam te maken als podiumleeuw, criticus, romancier, polemist, essayist en dramaturg. Maar aan de oorspronkelijke bron, die van de dichtkunst, bleef hij zich intussen laven. Dat resulteerde in overdonderende, virtuoze, veelkantige en buitengewoon meeslepende nieuwe bundels als Het glimpen van de welkwiek, Dolores en In de naam van de hond. En nu, precies tien jaar na zijn eersteling, heeft hij opnieuw een bundel af - een die weleens heel anders van toon zou kunnen zijn dan zijn eerste vier bundels. Maar Pfeijffer zou Pfeijffer niet zijn als hij die breuklijn niet ook daadwerkelijk zou willen laten zien. Hoe zou dat beter kunnen dan door ook de bestaande bundels (nog vermeerderd met verspreid en ongepubliceerd eerder werk) in die nieuwe uitgave op te nemen? Zo bedacht, zo gedaan. Resultaat is een Verzamelde gedichten die - unicum, voorzover bekend - tevens een niet te zuinig uitgevallen nieuwe bundel herbergt. Het is het royale gebaar van deze dichter die zijn tienjarige jubileum viert.
