The German political foundations are a world-wide unique phenomenon. The concept of their international work as both independent organizations and state financed institutes are naturally raising several questions. This book focus on the foundations’ work in Jerusalem, Ramallah and Tel Aviv. This region holds a special position within the German foreign policy due to unique character of the German-Israeli relations and the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict. Israeli, Palestinian and German authors contribute to this publication by examining the history, potential influence, scope of action, chances and limits of the foundations in that region from different perspectives and with a specific focus on current developments

'Brilliant and disturbing' Stephen Spender, New York Review of Books The classic work on 'the banality of evil', and a journalistic masterpiece Hannah Arendt's stunning and unnverving report on the trial of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann first appeared as a series of articles in the New Yorker in 1963. This edition includes material that came to light after the trial, as well as Arendt's postscript directly addressing the controversy that arose over her account. A major journalistic triumph by an intellectual of singular influence, this classic portrayal of the banality of evil is as shocking as it is informative - an unflinching look at one of the most unsettling issues of the twentieth century. 'Deals with the greatest problem of our time ... the problem of the human being within a modern totalitarian system' Bruno Bettelheim

Soon after the Emperor of German's journey to Constantinople and the Holy Land, nearly twenty years ago, the whole French nation was convulsed over an issue of Le Rire which purported to reveal the private travel notes of the Kaiser on what he termed his divine mission. ... In view of the demand of the itinerary only a single performance will be given in each locality. ... As France and Germany were at this time theoretically at peace, a mild attempt made by the French Government to suppress the issue; but every one secured a copy and the laugh was general at the kaiser's expense. ... In these times of stress, a little relaxation may not be amiss, and in that spirit, this translation of Le Rire is published.

Young Germans marched through Haifa shouting „Heil Hitler!“ and Swastika flags were hoisted at the German consulates in Mandatory Palestine. It was in November 1931 when a non-Jewish German made the initial contact with Nazi officials in Germany that led to the establishment of a miniature Third Reich with local NS groups, Hitler Youth program, and associations for women, teachers, and others in Palestine. Approximately 33% of all Palestine-Germans (Palästina-Deutsche) participated in the NS movement. Until today no extensive research written in English has been done on this bizarre „footnote“ in history. While previous publications in German mainly concentrated on the members of the Temple Society, this work includes Protestant and Catholic Germans as well. It focuses on the relationship of Palästina-Deutsche with local Arabs and Jews. It covers the period of 1933 to 1948 as well as the years between the establishing of the State of Israel and the departure of the last group of Germans in 1950. At the end of the book, the reader will find a list with more than seven hundred names of those who joined the NS groups.

Arendt's analysis of the seductive nature of evil is a disturbing one. We would like to think that anyone who would perpetrate such horror on the world is different from us, and that such atrocities are rarities in our world. But the history of groups such as the Jews, Kurds, Bosnians, and Native Americans, to name but a few, seems to suggest that such evil is all too commonplace. In revealing Eichmann as the pedestrian little man that he was, Arendt shows us that the veneer of civilization is a thin one indeed." -- Amazon.com Editorial review, 1994 ed.
