Erinnern und Vergessen sind omnipräsente Phänomene im Kontext der Literaturgeschichte. Sein über fünfzig Jahre hinweg entstandenes Werk umfasst Lyrik, Dramen und Laienspiele, mehrere Erzählungen und Novellen, kulturkritische Schriften sowie ein Spätwerk, das ihn sowohl als herausragenden Naturlyriker als auch experimentierfreudigen Geschichtslyriker ausweist.
