Excerpt from Geschichte der Indischen Religion Auch die Orientalisten muss ich um ihre Nachsicht bitten; denn so dankbar ich fur die Anfange im Sanskrit und die erste Einfuhrung in die Religionsgeschichte durch Herrn Prof. Dr. Roth in Tubingen bin, so darf ich mich doch nicht'zu den Mannern des Fachs rechnen. Ich hatte funfzehn Jahre lang keine Zeit diese Studien fortzusetzen, bis mir vor neun Jahren bei meiner Anstellung im Basler Missionshaus der Unterricht in der Reli gionsgeschichte ubertragen wurde, und auch hier konnte ich mich nicht mehr so weit in die Sprache hineinarbeiten, dass ich die Sanskrittexte ohne Uebersetzung hatte lesen konnen. Ich ware sehr dankbar gewesen, wenn irgend ein Mann des Fachs eine Uebersicht uber die Geschichte der indischen Religion veroffent licht hatte, denn das Diktiren raubte mir bei meinem Unterricht viele Zeit. Nun wage ich's, in Ermangelung eines Handbuchs, meine Darstellung der indischen Religion dem Druck zu uber geben, zunachst fur das Bedurfniss der Missionare, hoffe jedoch, dass sie auch angehenden Studirenden der Sanskritlitemtur zur ersten Orientirung in diesem Urwald behilflich sein konnte.
