Nach der zweibändigen Geschichte Frankens von F. Stein (1885/86) hat erstmals wieder das von Max Spindler herausgegebene Handbuch der bayerischen Landesgeschichte im ersten Teilband des Bandes III die Geschichte des Frankenlandes im Zusammenhang dargestellt. Seit dem Erscheinen der ersten Auflage dieses Teilbandes sind mehrere Werke zur Geschichte fränkischer Bezirke und viele Studien zu Einzelproblemen erschienen. Auch wenn die Geschichtswissenschaft diesen Neuerscheinungen wichtige Ergebnisse verdankt, bleibt doch das Handbuch Max Spindlers als Gesamtdarstellung weiterhin unverzichtbar. Es wird deutlich, wie die Lande an Main, Pegnitz und Regnitz, vom Spessart bis zum Frankenwald und zum Fichtelgebirge ihre heutige Gestalt gewonnen haben, wie der Stamm der Franken durch Siedlung und Landesausbau, durch Staatsbildung und durch seine kulturelle Leistung dieses Land geformt hat, und man begreift auch, warum das Gebiet bei höchst unterschiedlicher Entwicklung der Teile doch immer den einheitlichen Grund bewahrt hat: fränkische Sprache und Kultur. Schwerpunkte der Darstellung bilden die Anfänge der menschlichen Kultur in der Frühzeit, umfassend wird dann die Formung des Landes durch die fränkische Siedlung und Politik behandelt, ferner der Beitrag von Christentum und Kirche zur Entstehung einer eigenständigen Landeskultur. Sichtbar gemacht wird schließlich die Bedeutung der großen Herrschaftsträger, Königtum, Adel und Kirche, bis zur Ausbildung der einzelnen Formen der Landesherrschaft im ausgehenden Mittelalter und ihre Geschichte in der frühen Neuzeit. Breiten Raum nimmt die Entfaltung des geistigen Lebens, von Wissenschaft, Literatur, Musik und Kunst in Mittelalter und Neuzeit ein. Nicht zuletzt erfährt auch die gesellschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung eingehende Beachtung. Der vorliegende Band bietet in seiner Neuauflage erneut eine Darstellung nach dem neuesten Stand der Forschung. Das bewährte Prinzip des Handbuchs, das von der Wissenschaft erarbeitete Bild auch für Laien verständlich darzustellen, wurde dabei nicht aufgegeben. Die dritte Auflage gibt nun dem Herausgeber und dem Verlag die Möglichkeit, den Band, der in der ersten Auflage auch Schwaben und die Oberpfalz bis 1800 einbezog, in drei Teilbände aufzuteilen, die jeweils einem der drei Gebiete gewidmet sind und nun auch selbständig bezogen werden können.
