Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Neuzeit, Absolutismus, Industrialisierung, Note: sehr gut, Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg (Schweiz) (Philosophische Fakultät), Veranstaltung: Schweizer Erinnerungsorte, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich auf einer ersten, grundlegenden Ebene mit den Mechanismen von Erinnerung und Gedächtnis. Insbesondere die Funktionsprinzipien von überindividueller Erinnerung, von gemeinschaftlichem Gedächtnis sollen dabei genauer beleuchtet werden. Darüber hinaus wird auch versucht, die möglichen Zusammenhänge und Wechselwirkungen zwischen dem Erinnerungsgut eines sozialen Kollektives und dessen Selbstverständnis, dessen Identität zu skizzieren. Dabei steht das Verhältnis der einzelnen Menschen, aber insbesondere einer Gemeinschaft zu ihrer Vergangenheit im Zentrum. Die Fragen, wie gemeinschaftliche Erinnerung, eine gemeinsame Geschichte entstehen, wie sie sich auch entwickeln, und inwiefern sie sich auf Individuen oder auch Kollektive letztlich auch auswirken kann, werden in einem ersten Teil auf einer theoretischen Ebene behandelt, und vor den Hintergrund der Erkenntnisse aus der Gedächtnis- oder Erinnerungsforschung gestellt. Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand im Rahmen eines Seminars über das kollektive Gedächtnis der Schweiz und bestimmte Orte dieser Erinnerung, also Träger und Symbole der gemeinschaftlichen, nationalen Geschichte und Identität. Diese konzeptionelle Ausgangslage wird nachfolgend noch eingehender erläutert werden, und stellt am Ende der theoretischen Grundlagen die thematische Überleitung hin zu einem konkreten Fallbeispiel dar. An diesem Fallbeispiel sollen anschliessend in einem zweiten Teil die zuvor theoretisch umrissenen Prinzipien und Funktionen sozialer Gedächtnis- und Erinnerungskultur nachgezeichnet werden. Exemplarisch für einen Schweizer Erinnerungsort wird dabei die Geschichte und die Wahrnehmung des Simplontunnels genauer betrachtet werden. Der Fokus wird auch auf der Wahrnehmungsgeschichte liegen, wobei diese schwerlich vollständig gesondert vom eigentlichen Objekt an sich betrachtet werden kann. Deshalb werden alle, während der historischen Betrachtung des Simplontunnels angesprochenen Elemente, die in Bezug auf die Wahrnehmung des Bauwerkes stehen, gegen Ende dieser Arbeit in einer kurzen Perzeptionsgeschichte noch einmal zusammengefasst und in einen Zusammenhang gestellt. Nach dieser umfassenden Betrachtung werden die Auswirkungen des Simplontunnels auf die Fundierung einer gemeinschaftlichen, nationalen Geschichte und Identität geklärt sein. Dadurch sollte schliesslich auch die Frage, ob der Simplontunnel als Schweizer Erinnerungsort gelten kann, abschliessend beantwortet werden können.

Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people.
