Diskriminierung und Stigmatisierung sind schmerzhafte Erfahrungen für Betroffene und Angehörige. Viele Menschen müssen dies ihr ganzes Leben oder zumindest eine lange Zeit ertragen. Die Wurzeln des Stigmas reichen über Jahrzehnte weit in die Geschichte der Menschheit zurück. Schon damals wurden Menschen, welche sich durch ihr Verhalten von anderen abhoben, mit einem Zeichen versehen, um ihr Anderssein aufzuzeigen. Heutzutage werden keine Zeichen mehr verwendet, diese werden zum Teil durch Diagnosen aus dem psychiatrischen Formenkreis abgelöst. Eine psychiatrische Diagnose wie Schizophrenie, Demenz oder Psychose ist ein Gebilde, welches der Öffentlichkeit unzugänglich und nicht genau fassbar ist. Diagnosen über psychische Krankheiten lösen Angst und Verunsicherung aus, da das Wissen über diese Erkrankungen nicht ausreichend ist, um verbreitete meist negative Einstellungen, Meinungen und Attributionen auszumerzen. Psychisch kranke Menschen werden mit dieser Situation im Alltag oft konfrontiert. Ihnen wird schnell bewusst, dass sie von der übrigen Gesellschaft abweichen. Sie weichen von der Norm ab, was für die meisten Betroffenen rasch spürbar wird. Durch Erfahrungen, die diese Personen machen, wird auch ihre Persönlichkeit und Identität mitgeprägt. Sie beginnen sich als etwas Anderes, zu der „Norm“ nicht Passendes, zu sehen. Ein verminderter Selbstwert und ein negatives Selbstbild sind nur einige der Folgen, die aufgrund der Stigmatisierung entstehen.

The association between social class and psychiatric disorder has been one of the central topics of socio-epidemiological research since its inception. With remarkable consistency, numerous investigations have demonstrated an inverse correlation between social class and prevalence rates for most forms of psychopathology. The debate on the interpreta tion of these findings - social causation versus social selection processes - continues to this day. Moreover, the question as to what the psychoso cial processes are through which social class and individual psychopa thology are mediated has remained mostly unanswered. The concept of social stress may well provide new insights in this regard. One should note, in particular, the considerable conceptual and methodological progress made in life event research. Recently, the first attempts have been made to link the two concepts of social class and social stress. These developments will be retraced in this book in the light of new investigations. Descriptive epidemiological studies on the relation between social class and psychiatric disorders form the point of depar ture. Explicit reference is made to two classical studies in psychiatric epidemiology: Faris and Dunham's Chicago study and the New Haven study by Hollingshead and Redlich. Following on from there, various approaches in analytical epidemiological research are presented which attempt to determine whether - or, more precisely, to what extent - social causation or social selection processes can be said to be responsible for the higher rates of psychiatric disorders in lower social strata.

This book studies the relationship between institutionalism and schizophrenia in the lives of mental patients. The authors observed schizophrenic patients in three different mental hospitals over a period of eight years. The lives of long-term schizophrenic patients are strictly limited by their institutionalised environments, which often produce negative effects. For example, patients are especially vulnerable to social understimulation, reacing with apathy and withdrawal.
