In diesem Kontext ist auch die vorliegende Arbeit platziert. Sie konstatiert eine historisch neuartige Umbruchsituation und thematisiert diese spezifisch als eine „Neue Ära der Transformation“. Hat Karl Polanyi einst die erste „Great Transformation“ (1944) beschrieben und erklärt, so wird das 21. Jahrhundert offensichtlich durch eine zweite „Große Transformation“ geke- zeichnet sein, die noch zu beschreiben und vor allem zu erklären ist. Ein e- sprechender Versuch hierzu soll mit dieser Arbeit geleistet werden. Transfor- tion wird hierbei als ein eigener, ein besonderer Typ sozialen Wandels - stimmt.

Beyond Liberalism and Communism: Socialist Theory and the Chinese Case presents a new conceptual framework of socialism and applies it to the study of socialist development in China, shedding new light on modern China and signposting novel directions in socialist thought. Based on a Marxian-Polanyian approach, the book develops a new conceptual framework of socialism by taking the liberal and the communist challenges seriously.
